Illuvium is a gaming ecosystem that includes three, primary interconnected games. These are Illuvium Overworld, Illuvium Arena, and Illuvium Zero. All are free to play.
Illuvium also has their own token, ILV (Illuvium) that functions as a marketplace currency and a governance token. Illuvium migrated to the Immutable zkEVM network in 2024, launching ongoing, beta versions of all three games.
Immutable migrated to the Immutable zkEVM network in 2024, moving their entire gaming ecosystem including the Illuidex marketplace
Illuvium is accessible with the Immutable Passport, which provides login access to all the websites and games in the Illuvium ecosystem.
You can download all three Illuvium games through Epic Games. The Illuvium install contains both the Iluvium Overworld and the Illuvium Arena games, while Illuvium Zero is a separate, standalone installation.
Illuvium Zero is also available in the app stores for mobile devices.
For all the games and across all platforms, players can login with their Immutable Passport. Immutable Passports are free to setup and are an essential part of the Immutable zkEVM system. The Passport will function as both a login method, and as a wallet for storing all of your tokens and NFTs on Immutable zkEVM.
Illuvium Overworld is a 3D game about venturing out into the wilds of a hostile planet in search of resources and Illuvials, strange, powerful creatures.
The game offers a central, multiplayer hub, but active players spend most of their time visiting various regions in instanced, single-player adventures.
Illuvium Overworld features a community progression system, where certain regions aren’t accessible until a player happens upon the secret portal code!
Illuvium Overworld includes a tutorial to familiarize you with the controls and basic features of the game. But, in short, the objective is to find resources and Illuvials by heading through the Portal to reach far-off regions.
New regions in Illuvium Overworld only open up when a player discovers the correct code for the portal gate. The first player to discover this code receives exclusive access to the zone for six hours, giving them a chance to be the first ever to capture new Illuvials and gather new resources. Players have a chance of unlocking the code to a new Region every time they complete a Region run.
During a run you can search for natural resources, and hunt down Illuvials. Static resources include ores and plants which provide items needed for crafting as well as one-time use items to provide a bonus during an Illuvial encounter.
You can also harvest Morphopods. Morphopods are a living ‘resource’ that you harvest like other resources, though sometimes they fight back! Morphopods are an in-game item only, with no current use, though rumor has it they will be used in Illuvium Zero at some point in the future.
Pay a Fuel charge to use Autoscan before entering a region, or search manually with your special vision to find points of interest.
To capture an Illuvial you first have to damage it enough with your gun (and your Drone can help as well) which will open an energy rift. Enter the rift to engage in a one-round, auto-battle with the Illuvial, who sometimes brings along friends to fight with them. The player can only use the equipment and Illuvials they have in their inventory for the battle. If the player wins, they will be given a chance to try and capture one or more of the Illuvials from the battle. This attempt requires a Cured Shard, and, if successful, uses up a significant amount of Energy.
When visiting a Region, players have a limited time to explore, and also limited Energy to use. Harvesting and capturing Illuvials uses up Energy, which doesn’t replenish. When your time runs out and/or you run out of Energy, it’s time to head back to the Portal to visit the Hub where you can adjust your inventory, craft Augments, and Fuse your Illuvials.
Everyone can access Stage 0 of each Region for free. You can visit it as often as you like, though the potential Resource and Illuvial discoveries are limited. Finding better Resources and Illuvials to capture will require visiting higher tier Regions. And for that, you will need Fuel.
Fuel is a consumable resource that comes in three varieties – Crypton, Hyperion, and Solon. Players can purchase Fuel through the web interface.
Crypton is used for traveling, Solon for forging items and autoscanning regions, and Hyperion for creating Shards – items necessary to capture Illuvials.
The base, ‘Cured Shard’ can only hold level 0 Illuvials. To capture higher tier Illuvials, you will need Tier 1 (Common). Higher tier Shards also have increased capture odds. To forge tier 1 and higher Shards, you will need Hyperion Fuel (and Solon for the Master Shard, which is a guaranteed catch of ANY Illuvial).
The Forge is where players go for crafting. Here players can craft everything from Augments to Drone to Gemstones. Raw ore materials can be melted into Ingots, which are needed for many of the recipes in the Forge.
Most of the forging is free as long as you have the raw materials. Though some items, such as Drone upgrades and character skins will also require a payment in Solon fuel.
Illuvials gain experience when used in battle, which is needed to fuse them up to a higher tier. Merge three of the same Illuvial together (as long as all three have enough experience to meet the requirements) to upgrade them to a more impressive version such as Greater and Exalted.
You will need a Gem to Fuse Illuvials. Gems are player-crafted items. The type of Gem you use when Fusing Illuvials determines their elemental affinity Illuvials also sometimes ‘Holo’, or ‘Dark Holo’, special versions which are rarer than normal Illuvials.
Players receive a score when completing a region, based on how many Illuvials they captured and how many resources they gathered. These points are for daily leaderboards, which, at the moment, have no real purpose.
Earning in Illuvium Overworld is pretty simple actually. You just play, and any resources you gather or Illuvials you capture are automatically created as NFTs and sent to the inventory of your Immutable Passport. You can immediately head over to the IlluviDex Market and sell whatever you found! But, of course, the sort of things you are most likely to find in the starting zones aren’t going to be worth much.
Higher tier, rare Illuvials and hard to find crafting components are going to be more valuable. But getting to those will require leveling up your Illuvials and spending money on Fuel purchases.
Illuvium Arena is an auto-battler game. In a match, players will field their Trainer, who can be equipped with various items, and Illuvials, creatures captured and tamed from the Illuvium Overworld game.
Illuvium Arena offers several gameplay modes – Tutorial, Survival, Ascendant, and Gauntlet
Tutorial is pretty self-explanatory. It includes six lessons and covers the basics including positioning, synergies, and more. Enough to get you started. Mastery of the game will require much more study and playtime!
Survival mode gives players access to a random selection of Illuvials and features a never-ending series of battles, though the player can upgrade Illuvials and change their teammates between rounds with points earned with each victory. Play continues with progressively more difficult opponents until the player loses.
Ascendant is the PVP mode. Here you can play against other players in ranked battles, or in casual and custom matches. In the more recently introduced Leviathan mode, players can use their own NFTs in battle, taking advantage of any bonus stats those NFTs have from being leveled up.
Gauntlet mode is a tournament style PvP match featuring eight players battling for the top spot.
In Illuvium Arena, players field a team featuring their own avatar and a team of Illuvials, creatures from another planet with special powers and abilities.
Each character has Omega Power which slowly increases throughout the battle. When an Omega Power meter gets full, it triggers a special ability from that character. Teams receive bonuses for having multiple
Positioning matters as well. Most Illuvials just attack whichever enemy is closer, though some have special rules. It’s important to not only know how Illuvials on your own team work, but also how those of your opponent work as well.
Between each round players get a chance to change their positioning, change who is on the battlefield, and upgrade their Illuvials with points earned from the battle. Players fight through a number of rounds based on the game mode they’ve chosen.
Illuvium Arena includes leaderboards for the different game modes and a ranking system for the Ascendant modes.
At the moment, Illuvium Arena doesn’t offer any direct play and earn opportunities. You can earn airdrop points by playing, but otherwise, there are no rewards from Illuvium Arena directly – yet. Presumably, at some point in the hopefully near future, players will be able to earn rewards from seasonal leaderboards, regular tournaments, and other such game activities.
While the airdrop is still going, you can earn points from daily missions and weekly missions in Illuvium Arena, and for hitting certain milestones, such as getting to level 20 in Survival mode).
Illuvium Zero is a free to play, base-building game. Players build structures and harvest resources. These resources are then used to upgrade and construct new buildings, with more advanced buildings require a second tier of ‘Fuel’ resources.
Players who own an Illuvium land NFT can swap Fuel resources they acquire for ETH.
Illuvium Zero is a relatively basic base-building game. Construct your main building, gather resources, build other required structures, and slowly upgrade over time.
You will need power for all of your buildings, so be sure to build and upgrade Power Stations. You can construct roads to connect your buildings and boost efficiency. Also, some buildings see an effect on their efficiency based on proximity to other buildings. This can be a positive or a negative bonus. Use the Efficiency view to keep an eye on this whenever constructing a new building.
Four buildings are focused on Blueprint discovery, so you can skip these if you don’t plan on making Blueprints. These are the Scanner, the XX, the Data Bank, and the XX, used for minting Blueprints into NFTs.
Illuvium Zero offers two paths for play and earn enthusiasts, though only one is currently available. Players can earn by producing and selling Fuel (Hyperion, Solon, and XX) and by creating and selling blueprints (currently inactive).
Serious players of Illuvium will need all three types of Fuel to access higher tier regions, craft higher tier items, and for pre-scanning regions for resources. Illuvium Zero players who own land plots can sell the Fuel they produce for ETH.
As for Blueprints, players can still discover these in Illuvium Zero, but the ability to mint them as NFTs is currently disabled. Any existing Blueprints you see on the markets are from an alpha test when a short window was opening for minting. Blueprints are not really in high demand at the moment, so I’m not sure there would be much profit to make if minting was opened again. Hopefully the Illuvium team is working on some sort of solution and long-term, future plan for the Blueprint crafting feature.
Unfortunately, Illuvium Zero does not offer any play and earn opportunities for free to play players. The only real reason to play the free to play version of Illuvium Zero is to gather a few extra airdrop points for completing daily missions, and as a preview for anyone who is considering purchasing a land plot.
However, before you do buy an Illuvium land, be aware that NFT land plots do NOT have access to all resources like the free to play plots do. Your progress will be limited by whatever resources are available on your NFT plot.
Additionally, Illuvium is currently in the midst of an airdrop campaign. You can earn points towards this campaign by completing missions involving all three Illuvium games. This includes daily missions, repeatable missions, and milestone rewards.
You don’t even need to make any claims or transactions for this airdrop. The points just accumulate automatically when you finish the requirements for a mission or milestone. In fact, if you’ve played any of the Illuvium games, you might have already accumulated airdrop points!

Illuvium supports NFTs for most items within the Illuvium Overworld, including equipment, consumables, and Illuvials. Owned Illuvials can be used in Overworld and in certain game modes in Illuvium Arena.
Illuvium also has land plots, which are used in Illuvium Zero.
You can buy and sell NFTs from all the Illuvium collections on the official marketplace on the Illuvidex, or through third-party markets such as TokenTrove.
Ever since the launch of their ILV token, Illuvium has been running a player governance system, letting stakers of ILV tokens vote on various proposals and for members of the governing council.

Illuvium is off to a good start, though they still have some areas they need to improve on.
Being the first game on Immutable zkEVM and pioneers of integrating the Immutable Passport has certainly given Illuvium a boost. And they still seem to have a solid playerbase, though some discontent is rising as players wait for more updates, particularly around leaderboards and play to earn opportunities.
There is also some awkwardness with flipping back between the game and a webpage if you need to look at the market. And though it's not really a huge deal, an integrated market would be huge.
And though technically, Illuvium Overworld is an MMO, all region adventures are instanced, solo events. And the main Illuvium hub almost never has people just hanging around. Some sort of reason for community gatherings and interactions would help to keep players interested in the game.
But, overall, Illuvium has a solid base of core gameplay. Now they just need to work on making it more fun!
