Pixels, one of the biggest web3 farming social games, just announced a major shift in how it runs its game and tokenomics. On April 21st, the team revealed plans to focus more on long-term growth and less on surface-level user numbers. The goal is to reward loyal players, improve gameplay, and make $PIXEL—a key part of its ecosystem—stronger and more useful across games.

Pixels Rethinks What Growth Looks Like

Since moving from Polygon to the Ronin network in late 2023, Pixels has seen fast growth. Its cozy gameplay and low entry barrier helped it attract over one million daily users by mid-2024. The game lets players farm, craft, decorate land, and explore. It also supports over 65 NFT collections, allowing popular avatars like Bored Apes and Pudgy Penguins to be used in-game.

As the platform evolves, the team is now focusing on strengthening the game's foundation. With its April update, Pixels is leaning into smarter rewards and deeper player engagement. The aim is to grow a more stable, value-driven economy rather than chasing raw user numbers.

Focus Shifts from DAA to Quality DAU

First off, Pixels is dropping its focus on daily active addresses (DAA) and is now working to attract players who are more active, spend more, or hold $PIXEL long-term. These users bring more value to the game, and the team wants to give them more in return.

As part of this shift, core features and rewards will now be gated behind VIP access. Players will need to make a purchase to unlock more parts of the game. The idea is to boost conversions from free users to paying ones.

Heavier Fees and Bigger Rewards for Stakers

Big changes are coming to the $PIXEL economy. Those who withdraw $PIXEL will face higher fees. These fees won't just disappear—they'll be sent to the stakers. At the same time, staking will start offering more rewards. Players will earn based on how active they are and how much they spend in-game.

If you hold $PIXEL inside the game, it will now be auto-staked. You won't have to do anything. If you also own a Farm Land NFT, you'll get bonus rewards on top of that. All of this is meant to reward players who stick with the game and help grow its economy.

$vPIXEL Will Power a New Kind of Game Economy

One of the biggest updates is the launch of $vPIXEL. Powered by Limit Break's Apptokens platform, $vPIXEL is a new version of the main token. It's backed 1:1 by $PIXEL but can't be sold. It's only for spending or staking. The key advantage is that players can withdraw it with no fees. It will also be usable in other games, making it easier to earn and spend across the wider Pixels ecosystem.

This gives players a clear choice—pay fees to extract $PIXEL, or skip fees and use $vPIXEL inside the network. It's a big step toward building a broader play to earn platform that links multiple games and rewards serious players.

Pixels Doubles Down on What Made It Fun

Pixels is also going back to what made it popular in the first place—fun, social play. The team is updating core loops (for Chapter 3) and adding more casual, community-driven features. These were a key part of the game's early success, and the team wants to bring that back.

Growth tools like referrals and content rewards are also coming back. With the economy tightening, these systems will help drive behavior that benefits the whole ecosystem.

More Games, More Utility, More Data

The team isn't stopping with Pixels, though. They're building more first-party titles, including Pixels Pals, a Tamagotchi mobile game launching in June or July. They're also working with partners like Runiverse to expand where and how $PIXEL can be used.

Behind the scenes, Pixels is building tools to track and analyze user behavior. They want to know who's holding tokens, who's spending them, and which rewards work best. These tools are already live in Pixels and Pixel Dungeons and will later support other web3 and web2 games.

A Shift with Eyes on the Long Term

Founder Luke Barwikowski says these changes may hurt short-term stats like DAA. But they're meant to build a stronger base for the future. With a better earnings model, smarter token use, and a clear focus on fun, Pixels is striving to become a better platform for play to earn—and a web3 ecosystem that could outlast the hype.
