Immutable’s flagship game, Gods Unchained, will migrate from Immutable X to the company’s newly launched zkEVM chain, according to an official FAQ published April 11.
No firm migration date has been announced, but the team said players will receive “plenty of notice” before the process begins. A detailed rollout plan is expected to be published ahead of the transition.
The decision to move from Immutable X to Immutable zkEVM, a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine chain built using Polygon technology, reflects a shift toward long-term infrastructure upgrades for the game. The zkEVM chain supports standard Ethereum smart contracts, which are not fully compatible with Immutable X.
According to the development team, the migration will unlock new functionality, including improved crafting, expanded economic layers, and Passport integration with Immutable’s streamlined web3 identity system.
Players will also gain access to simplified on-ramps and bridging tools through services such as Squid, Layerswap, and Transak, making it easier to move assets and participate in the in-game economy.
The majority of in-game assets, including cards, trinkets, and boards, will be automatically migrated to zkEVM. These assets will remain in their original wallets and continue to function as they currently do.
Token balances, however, will not be automatically transferred. Users will need to manually bridge tokens such as $IMX, $GODS, $ETH, and $USDC to the new chain using third-party tools. Layerswap currently supports bridging $GODS.
There are no plans to force users into Immutable’s Passport wallet. The first migration phase will maintain support for externally owned accounts (EOAs). Passport-based accounts may become more relevant in later phases, but will remain optional for now.
Users transacting on zkEVM using wallets like MetaMask will pay small gas fees in $IMX. In contrast, Passport accounts will benefit from gas-free transactions once supported.
Trading fees will remain unchanged at 9%. Additionally, the migration will not affect core metadata such as token IDs, rarity, or “Proto” numbers associated with cards.
Plain cards non-NFT cards used in casual play, will also remain unaffected.
The migration does not address all gameplay-related concerns. The team confirmed that long-standing issues like deck peeking are not solved by the chain transition but remain on the development roadmap.
That said, the migration opens the door to smart contract-enabled features in the future. This includes potential updates to the Forge system, which currently requires multiple manual steps, and the eventual introduction of sealed products like chests or packs with unique drop mechanics.
A new in-game marketplace called Eucos Emporium is also planned. The store will serve as a hub for cosmetic items and potentially expand to cover broader purchasing activity within the game’s ecosystem.
The move to zkEVM may enable deeper interoperability with other games built on the same infrastructure. One possibility mentioned is collaboration with Guild of Guardians, another Immutable-developed title that shares lore with Gods Unchained.
There are no immediate plans to release a mobile app, though the developers acknowledged growing demand for mobile-first access and said the topic is under ongoing evaluation.
Support during and after the migration will be available via Discord and standard customer service channels. Users will not be required to relink wallets or accounts as part of the process.
While Immutable X remains active, the shift suggests the studio is placing long-term bets on zkEVM as its primary solution going forward.
A migration timeline, walkthrough, and user resources are expected in the coming weeks.
