B3, the open gaming Layer 3 chain on Base, has officially announced the launch of Play to Win events and a new airdrop standard, with the latter taking you outside to the real world like Pokémon GO.
Play to Win events represent B3’s next phase of rewards on their blockchain gaming platform, bsmnt.fun.
These events are essentially play to earn tournaments that help both web3 and web2 game developers monetize their games and increase player activity, while rewarding the best players in the process. Developers that want to boost player activity in their indie games and earn in the process don’t need any blockchain knowledge if they want to bring their web2 game over to the web3 gaming platform, as the process of moving a game on-chain and launching a tournament can supposedly be all done “in minutes,” according to the official X announcement thread.
When setting up a tournament, creators can change the monetization rules to their liking. It’s possible to choose the prize currency, the dev’s share of the prize pool, whether the tournament should be free to enter or have an entry fee, as well as whether player entries should be matched or if players should fund the reward pool instead.
Developers don’t have to worry too much about using a certain prize currency, because on the player side, anyone looking to join a tournament will have a seamless buy-in experience where any token on any chain can be used to enter competitions. Players don’t have to worry about bridging, wait times, nor swapping. This user-friendly experience is said to be powered by Anyspend, with Apple Pay support planned to be added soon.
With the introduction of Play to Win events, this gaming chain has kicked off their plans to encourage game developers to build on B3 and deploy on bsmnt.fun. If this is “just the beginning,” it will be interesting to see what else the team has in store for both developers and gamers alike.
If you want to participate and earn in B3’s Play to Win events, simply head on over to the tournaments section of bsmnt.fun to check which competitions are currently live to play and earn in. Before joining a tournament, you will need to login to the gaming platform using a crypto wallet such as MetaMask, Phantom, or Coinbase Wallet, or a social sign-in option like Google, Apple, Discord, and more.
For the launch of this feature, B3 has partnered with 4 different games, subsidizing prize pools for each:
Tournaments for all 4 games began alongside the release of the new rewards system on April 30th, and all of them are still active at the time of writing.
B3’s new airdrop standard is an AR-based experience inspired by Pokémon GO.
Using the B3AR app, users can find drops in real life that lets them claim tokens on the Base network. For the launch, the team was giving away up to 4000 $B3 tokens on Base around the FarCon 2025 event in New York City during the first weekend of May. In the future, you can look forward to seeing more opportunities to claim rewards, with the team planning on bringing more tokens, partners, and collectables to the app in the near future.
If you end up being in the right place at the right time, you could end up catching rare NFTs and tokens as you race to claim limited-time drops before someone else gets to them. There is a live map that not only lets you see drops in real time, but also other players hunting for the same airdrops.
The blockchain-powered B3AR app is free to download and is currently only available on iOS devices via the App Store. An Android version does not seem to have been announced.
Earlier this year, B3 announced its first AI Game Buildathon.
