Underneath all the jank, repetition, and the absurd launch price is a seriously good game.
That being said, its the type of game that appeals to a very niche category of players -- a category that has little overlap with Minecraft's community. I think this is the main reason why Legends was received so negatively compared to Dungeons. RTS games take quick thinking, dedication, and a degree of hating yourself that just isn't marketable or enjoyable to the mainstream gaming ecosystem.
Now that we've looked at why Legends was a commercial flop, lets discuss whether or not the game is actually worth buying in the year 2025+
The game was abandoned 9 months after release, but there remains a sizable amount of content to work with. My experience while playing this game was that I could reach an hour max each play session before getting demotivated and returning the next day.
Most of the game is centered on traveling to villages/POIs on a map, defending those areas from Piglin attacks via building defenses, and going on the offensive to the various Piglin settlements. One of the high points of this game is the behavior of the Piglins. They react to your choices, conquering areas you neglect, strengthening and defending besieged camps, and on higher difficulties even launching joint attacks from seperate Piglin camps to consolidate their armies. Every day/night cycle you focus your attention on a different area of the map, because the Piglins choose a different area to threaten each time. Villages you defend will provide you with a steady supply of whatever resources that area has in return for your support, so you are incentivized to maintain as much control over the map as possible.
Going on the offensive is more repetitive/dull, but it does have its upsides. When attacking camps you are always at a disadvantage by the sheer number of troops, so you have to select your units strategically based on the defenses of that camp. The fight often spans several days, where you lay siege to the enemy over a long period before finally breaking through to the camp and destroying the nether portal that spawns the Piglins.
Unit combat is complicated and organizing your troops is very hard to do, but the game lets you change difficulties as needed if you are unable to prosper in challenging situations.
Defense is in my opinion the most fun aspect of the game. Using your supplies you can provide villages with an array of archer towers. walls, traps, and support buildings.
Is this game worth buying if you are not a hardcore RTS fan? I'd say it depends on the price. The game often goes on sale, especially now that the hype has died down. At the time of writing this it is on sale for 16$. Unless you really enjoy strategy games, I'd recommend waiting for it to go to the 10-20$ dollar range and then consider picking it up.
Overall rating: 6/10
Not worth £35.
If this game isn't on sale for at least 75% off, you shouldn't buy it.
