Upland has announced the reveal of Totems, a collection of living map assets divided into 11 different Life Forms.
These Life Forms make up a total of 5555 Totems, set to be continually unveiled across 5 different chapters, with the first chapter reveal video released last week. Players will be able to nurture their own Totems by keeping their health in shape. This is done by spending Protem, a currency that you’ll receive a certain amount of depending on the number of Totems you own. In the future, Protem will be replaced by Stem, a new currency for “powering life in Upland.” The currency will be a crucial part of the game’s upcoming Life feature, whose design “will closely mirror the real world, where living assets will require nourishment in the form of Stem.” Totems essentially serve as a sneak peek for this upcoming simulation feature, and once Stem is officially released, you’ll be able to exchange your Protem for the new currency at a 1:1 ratio.
You’ll be able to get your hand on Totems by buying a Mystery Pass in the UPX Store. In order to take part in sales for these Totem Mystery Passes, you’ll have to register 24 hours in advance and log in on the day of the sale in order to successfully buy the Pass. Your Totem will be revealed after all the Passes from the first chapter have been sold and after the developers finish manufacturing the specific Totems designated for the sale.
In the first chapter, the team has revealed the Palm Tree and Dragonfly Life Forms. Totems differ in 5 visual traits, with each trait having a mapped attribute.
