In a speech presented at Augmented World Expo held in Santa Clara, USA, the CEO of Unity Technologies, John Riccitiello, said that there will be millions of destinations in the metaverse over time like there are millions of websites today.
He defined the Metaverse as the next generation of the internet that is always real-time, mostly 3D, mostly interactive, mostly social and mostly persistent. He weasel-worded “mostly” because it seems more reasonable as a definition to the maker of numerous popular engines.
He further gave accolades to SCI-FI authors of insightful metaverse novels, saying they were right about the Metaverse. The Metaverse should make you feel inside another world, but he doesn't support the idea of having a single avatar across the metaverse; there should be the freedom to have unique avatars for every world.
He also noted that they were wrong to have thought the Metaverse could be accessed only by VR headsets. He believes there could be access to the Metaverse via headsets, glasses, PCs, consoles and smartphones.
According to him, 3D can change how we digest information, like understanding the human body or designing a room. He believes in the power of social connectivity to do unusual activities.
“The world of the metaverse today goes beyond the science fiction of the 1990s,” he said. “I hope this talk can be a call of imagination for the next era of the internet and 3D.”
Consequently, Kevin Krewell, an analyst at Tirias Research, agrees with Riccitiello’s view of the Metaverse as it benefits Unity Technologies, especially with real-time and 3D parts. However, he points out the unavailability of a particular browser for the metaverse as a hindrance to the millions of metaverse destinations.
