Following a successful OG Mystery Box NFT sale, developer Oxalis Games has now announced that Moonfrost is launching into Early Access on Wednesday, July 16 at 11 AM UTC through the Open Loot launcher, opening up a new phase in which you can experience the game’s web3-powered economy and see what it will be like to play and earn $FROST.

What Is Moonfrost?

Moonfrost is a free to play farming RPG in which you progress through seasonal story-driven quests and complete daily tasks as you plant varied crops, chop trees, mine stone and ores, clear debris, and go fishing. Enjoy relaxing isometric gameplay and explore the game’s beautiful world featuring a diverse cast of NPCs while building your very own home with an in-depth building system and a wide range of decorative items.

After undergoing months of alpha testing, the cozy game launches on July 16 in Early Access for Gnome Key holders and Frost Hunter License owners, exclusively on the launcher of the Open Loot platform. This NFT-gated phase is supposedly planned to last for about one month, after which it will go fully live to the public as a free to play title with optional web3 earning elements that can be accessed through the use of Collectable Items that include Frost Tools (non-tradable), FROSTprints (NFTs), and Frost Workbenches (NFTs), all of which we’ll talk about a bit later. Once the game goes F2P, it should become available for download on the Epic Games Store for Windows PCs, where it was listed in June 2025 amidst quick NFT sales. A mobile version is in development, but a release date on that is not available as the developers remain laser-focused on delivering a quality blockchain gaming experience on PC.

What’s New in Moonfrost Early Access?

The Early Access version of Moonfrost includes a new map, a new playable character, fishing, basic cooking, village rebuilding, a collection album, task log, multi-track task system, order system, translation support, and general improvements and bug fixes.

The order system consists of daily objectives that require you to deliver certain in-game resources in order to earn Sil, a non-tradable soft currency needed for buying in-game items. You may also find Special Orders that award CRYO, $FROST, and non-tradable Craftcoins, with Craftcoins needed for crafting regular non-NFT blueprints.

On top of all these new additions and enhancements, this phase introduces the game’s blockchain-powered in-game economy. However, the team has stated in a Discord announcement that web3 features and the in-game economy will be disabled at launch in order to make sure the servers are stable and any critical issues are addressed on time. No timeframe for this was given, but hopefully it won’t take too long to make sure everything is good to go to officially kick off the game’s play to earn economy.

An official installation guide is available to help you get started, with a Gnome Key needed to begin playing on July 16. Here are the official system requirements:

  • Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 7
    • CPU: Intel Core i3
    • RAM: 8 GB
    • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti or AMD RX 580
  • Recommended:
    • OS: Windows 11
    • CPU: Intel Core i5
    • RAM: 16 GB
    • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super or AMD RX 5700 XT

How to Play and Earn in Moonfrost Early Access

At some point post-launch, players will be able to play and earn an off-chain, non-tradable currency called CRYO (previously known as SHARDS) through gameplay by using Frost Tools. Later on after TGE, players might get to choose to convert CRYO into crypto rewards such as Mystery Boxes and $FROST tokens. Mystery Boxes are lootboxes containing useful items for participating in the game’s core earning loop such as FROST Workbenches, FROSTprints, and more. The game’s $FROST token is set to replace CRYO post-TGE for play to earn rewards. CRYO will not disappear when that happens, but will simply stop being distributed as an in-game reward. Players will also be able to spend CRYO on in-game items, and spending in-game is set to have “a better value proposition than swapping them for FROST,” according to the in-game currency’s wiki page.

To earn CRYO, and potentially a $FROST token airdrop in the process, you need non-tradable Frost Tools, which currently come in 3 types: axe, pickaxe, and fishing rod. What makes these different from regular tools is that each Frost Tool has a certain amount of ‘Luck’ that affects the number of token rewards and other goodies you could potentially receive when using these tools. When $FROST is live, Frost Tools are what you will need to earn the token through gameplay, and the rarer the tools you have, the more Luck they got, in turn giving you a better chance of earning more tokens and collectable items from wood chopping, mining, and fishing activities.

To obtain Frost Tools, you need to craft them using NFT blueprints called FROSTprints. These blueprints come in varying rarities and can be found in Mystery Boxes, bought and rented from the Open Loot Marketplace, as well as earned as an in-game reward and rare loot drop. It is possible to upgrade a FROSTprint to a higher rarity by using 2 FROSTprints of the same rarity, Upgrade Points, and a certain amount of Liquid Luck or $FROST tokens, with the quantity of Upgrade Points and Liquid Luck required increasing with rarity. Upgrade Points represent a non-tradable soft currency that is earned by crafting Frost Tools and by fusing Luck Charms. The only way to earn Luck Charms, which boost the Luck of Frost Tools when fused, is to find them in Mystery Boxes and trade them on the NFT marketplace.

Once you have a FROSTprint, you then also need a Frost Workbench of at least the same rarity. Frost Workbenches can be obtained in the same ways as a FROSTprint, and can be upgraded to higher rarities as well, with the upgrade process requiring 2 Frost Workbenches of the same rarity, Upgrade Points, and some CRYO / $FROST.

After you have these two special Frost assets, which are the FROSTprint and Frost Workbench, all you will then need is a regular non-Frost version of the tool you want to craft, but also some Liquid Luck, which is a non-tradable premium hard currency that can be purchased in bundles (starting at $4.99) from Open Loot, potentially gained in Mystery Boxes, and possibly earned through in-game rewards or rare loot drops. The amount of Liquid Luck needed seems to vary based on the base tool used in crafting a Frost Tool.

With all that, you’ve successfully crafted your first Frost Tool, with the tool inheriting the stats and properties of the regular base tool. There are 4 versions of each type of regular tool: stone, copper, silver, and gold. The better base tool you have, the more durability it has alongside other stats, such as the amount of damage each hit does or the types of resources you can collect.

To sum up, let’s say you want to craft a Legendary Frost Pickaxe. In that case, you will need a Legendary Pickaxe FROSTprint and a Frost Workbench that is at least of Legendary rarity, plus the base Pickaxe (crafted with easily attainable in-game resources), and some Liquid Luck (at least 175 Liquid Luck if you’re using the most basic Stone Pickaxe). Technically, all of this can be earned in-game for free, but the chances of getting Frost-related items dropped through gameplay is unknown, and likely slim. Especially for Legendary collectable items, as there are 9 different rarities in total: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Mythic, Exalted, Exotic, and Transcendent.

Be sure to check out the game's official wiki to learn more about gameplay mechanics and everything about its web3 economy.

This web3 side of the game is completely optional, and you can enjoy Moonfrost entirely as a high-quality web2 game without needing to know anything about crypto and blockchain technologies. If you want to play and earn though, then Frost Tools are your gateway to earning CRYO and eventually $FROST tokens through leisurely gameplay. If you don’t want to wait potentially about a month for the official free to play launch, then you can get started with playing the Early Access version of the game by owning one of 8000 Gnome Keys, available for purchase on the Open Loot marketplace for a current floor price of $9.90. Only one key can be used per account, with the NFT simply serving as your entry ticket to the game itself. Web3 features won’t be available straight away on July 16, but once the servers are stable and any critical issues are resolved, the play and earn economy should go live shortly after the launch of this early phase.
