Pixelcraft Studios, the team behind NFT gaming protocol Aavegotchi, has announced that it has officially chosen Coinbase’s Ethereum L2, Base, as the settlement layer for their upcoming Layer 3 rollup, Gotchichain.

Why Base?

The reason why they chose Base, according to the announcement, is because the EVM-compatible Layer 2 chain provides a low-cost, safe and developer-friendly way to create on-chain games, while "still remaining strongly aligned with Ethereum.”

The CEO of Pixelcraft Studios, Coderdan, said the following in the announcement:

“We are proud to work with the Base team as we explore new horizons in blockchain gaming. The Aavegotchi Gaming Console, powered by Gotchichain and Base's infrastructure, is set to offer open-source, onchain gaming like never before. We are delighted to deliver a powerful gaming experience to our users, powered by fast and scalable L2 technology.”

With this new partnership, the studio will also be consulting with the Base team about using the Optimism Stack to further improve their gaming-focused L3, with the official post describing Optimism Stack as a “gift to the open-source community” that forms the foundation for a “superchain” of L2s as it can create a “united ecosystem of scalability solutions” by providing shared interoperability, sequencing and governance.

Jesse Pollak, the creator of Base, added:

"Base is dedicated to supporting innovative projects that enable anyone, anywhere, to get onchain and delight users with new experiences. We're excited to see how Gotchichain will transform player interaction and engagement within the growing onchain gaming landscape, leveraging our L2 capabilities for scalability and low transaction costs."

When Does Gotchichain Launch?

Gotchichain is planned to launch in Q2 2024. It will power the Aavegotchi Gaming Console, which was revealed in a dev update in January 2024 to be an on-chain layer that will store data such as assets, player profiles, and game progression on the chain, making sure it is safe while enabling cross-game interoperability through the use of features such as on-chain Profile Badges, which are soulbound tokens that players will be awarded with for completing certain in-game goals. Other developers can then use these Badges from other Web3 titles for token-gated progression systems in their own games. Badges will also level up player profiles, providing access to more rewards that can include in-game items, profile customization options and more.
