The Closure Announcement

The farewell message, posted under the name "Bearington & Team Z5" in the game's official channels, confirmed the full shutdown with no operational continuity. "Due to unavoidable circumstances, our studio is shutting down, and as of today, all members of the Z5 team have been laid off. Consequently, we are no longer able to maintain official operations or support for the game," the statement read.

A refund process and server shutdown schedule are to be detailed in a separate announcement, with the team noting specific technical timelines were not yet included in the initial farewell notice.

The studio closed the message with appreciation for its player community. "We want to express our deepest gratitude to every player who joined us in this adventure. Your support was the driving force behind everything we built. Seeing people truly enjoy our work has been the greatest honor of our careers."

A Four-Year Journey That Began With Four People

Z5 was founded in 2020 by Kim Kang-soo, previously the producer of the popular web2 mobile title Dragon Village. The studio launched with a team of four, building its vision around a pixel art MMORPG with blockchain-native ownership and play-to-earn mechanics. The game was originally released as Meta Toy City before being rebranded as Pixel Heroes Adventure in May 2024.

Pixel Heroes Adventure was built on both the Ronin Network and Immutable zkEVM, using a dual-token economy with $ADVTR and MGOLD as its primary currency layer, alongside Diamonds as a significant in-game resource. The game featured hack-and-slash combat, open-world exploration, boss raids, a colosseum PvP mode, NFT-based characters including the Primal HeroZ tier, and a Play-to-Mint and Play-to-Airdrop reward system. The game was available on both Android and iOS.

The Nexus Acquisition That Did Not Save It

In September 2025, publicly traded South Korean company Nexus announced it had acquired Z5 Games. The terms of the deal were not disclosed at the time. Kim Kang-soo was brought into Nexus to oversee tokenomics design and execution across its game portfolio, including the Nexus title R.O.H.A.N.2, which runs on the Cross Protocol L1 blockchain.

The integration was expected to proceed through late 2025 and into 2026, with plans for content expansion, new NFT systems, and technical optimizations described in post-acquisition announcements. The April 2025 roadmap had laid out ambitious goals including Adventure Land NFTs, a ToyZ Transcendence System, expanded PvP, and AI companions. As recently as April 1, 2026, Pixel Heroes Adventure ran a Paint Snap event offering 30,000 Diamond rewards to participants. The shutdown announcement came days afterward, leaving the community with little warning.

A Pattern of Closures in Blockchain Gaming

The Z5 closure is the latest in a string of studio shutdowns and layoffs that have marked the gaming industry throughout 2025 and into 2026. A survey from the 2026 State of the Game Industry Report found that roughly one-third of U.S. game industry workers reported being laid off in the past two years, with around 28% worldwide experiencing the same. Blockchain gaming specifically has seen a contraction phase as early-cycle enthusiasm gave way to harder economic realities, with player retention and sustainable tokenomics proving difficult to balance.

Pixel Heroes Adventure ran for approximately four years from its earliest public phase, accumulated an active community across global servers, and was the subject of a corporate acquisition just months before its end. The exact reasons behind the unavoidable circumstances cited in the closure notice were not disclosed.

What Happens Next

Players with assets, currency, or active purchases tied to the game are directed to await a forthcoming announcement that will detail the server shutdown timeline and the refund process. The studio's farewell message included a note of quiet hope, suggesting the team has not closed the door entirely on future projects, though no specific plans were stated.

"While official services are ending, we remain aware of the love you've shown for this game. Though the team is parting ways, we leave with a quiet hope. Thank you for being the heroes of our story."
