More than a month after the launch of Moonfrost in Early Access, the planned web3 features are now finally live, kickstarting the game’s blockchain-powered economy by enabling players to earn a non-tradable currency through gameplay that will be possible to redeem for crypto rewards in the future.
What Is Moonfrost?
Moonfrost is a cozy, free to play farming RPG where players progress through seasonal, story-driven quests while completing daily activities such as planting crops, chopping trees, mining ores, clearing debris, and fishing. Featuring isometric gameplay and a vibrant cast of NPCs, the isometric game combines relaxing resource management with exploration and homebuilding. An in-depth construction system allows you to design your own home and decorate it with a wide selection of items to personalize your space.
After months of alpha testing, Moonfrost officially entered Early Access on July 16, available to Gnome Key holders and Frost Hunter License owners through the Open Loot Launcher. This first phase is NFT-gated and was expected to run for about one month before transitioning into a full free to play release. However, the NFT-only phase of Early Access phase is still ongoing, with no official F2P launch date available at the time of writing. Once the game does open to all gamers as a free to play title, you will be able to download it on the Epic Games Store for Windows PC without needing to interact with any blockchain features. A mobile version is planned for later down the line.
The Early Access build launched with a number of new gameplay features that included a new map, fishing, basic cooking, a new playable character, village rebuilding, an order system, and more. And now, we finally have the game’s optional web3 layer included as well to give players an early glimpse of the crypto side of the game economy, which will eventually allow players to play to earn $FROST tokens after TGE takes place potentially in Q4 2025. Here’s an overview of web3 features now live.
Which Web3 Features Are Now Live in Moonfrost Early Access?
After ensuring server stability and fixing key issues, Moonfrost’s Early Access version was updated on September 3 to activate web3 features, enabling the blockchain economy and allowing players to use Open Loot items in-game.
That being said, all essential web3 features are now live in the game, allowing players to use Mystery Box items in-game and craft their first Frost Tool to start earning CRYO, an off-chain soft currency previously known as SHARDS. Mystery Boxes are lootboxes that might contain Frost Workbenches, FROSTprints, Luck Charms, Liquid Luck, and Gnome/Access Keys. This means that you can now start using Frost Workbenches, FROSTprints, and Liquid Luck to craft Frost Tools, which give you the ability to earn CRYO through gameplay. Every crafted Frost Tool gives you 1 Upgrade Point that you can use to upgrade Frost Workbenches, FROSTprints, and Luck Charms.
In the future, CRYO will be replaced by $FROST once the token is live, but for now players can earn this non-tradable in-game currency and be rewarded for their efforts in the future by having the ability to redeem their accumulated CRYO for various rewards such as Mystery Boxes and $FROST tokens. CRYO collectors will also have the option to spend the currency in-game as an alternative option to $FROST. Once the actual token is live though, it won’t be possible to earn CRYO through gameplay anymore, but it won’t disappear from player’s holdings either, and they won’t automatically convert to $FROST in order to give you the freedom to choose how you’d like to spend the currency. Once $FROST replaces CRYO, you can look forward to earning the game's core token through the same type of resource gathering gameplay, but also through more creative leaderboard events.
Together, these features unlock the play to earn economy and form the basis of Moonfrost’s blockchain integration. Keep on reading below for more in-depth details on these web3 features and how you can play and earn right now.
How to Play and Earn in Moonfrost Early Access
Moonfrost’s earning system revolves around an in-game soft currency called CRYO, which can be earned through gameplay using Frost Tools.
CRYO is off-chain and non-tradable, but players will later be able to convert it into blockchain rewards such as Mystery Boxes and $FROST tokens once TGE takes place. Mystery Boxes can contain valuable items, most of which you need to start your play to earn journey: FROSTprints, Frost Workbenches, Liquid Luck, Gnome/Access Keys, and Luck Charms. After TGE, $FROST will fully replace CRYO as the core play to earn token, while CRYO will remain in-game but no longer be distributed as a reward.
To start earning, players need to craft Frost Tools. These special tools come in three types: axe, pickaxe, and fishing rod: and each carries a unique Luck attribute that influences the amount of tokens and rewards you can gain. The rarer the tool, the higher its Luck stat, which directly increases your chances of receiving bigger rewards when chopping wood, mining, or fishing.
Crafting Frost Tools requires the base tool, some Liquid Luck, plus two specific NFT assets: FROSTprints and Frost Workbenches. Both come in varying rarities and can be obtained in Mystery Boxes, earned as rewards, or bought and rented from the Open Loot Marketplace. Upgrading these assets requires merging duplicates alongside spending Upgrade Points (a soft currency gained from crafting and fusing) and either Liquid Luck or $FROST once the token is live. Luck Charms, another rare drop found in Mystery Boxes, can also be fused to increase the Luck stat of Frost Tools.
When crafting, you also need a base version of the tool (stone, copper, silver, or gold). The quality of this base tool determines durability and efficiency, and its properties are inherited by the Frost Tool you create. To finalize the crafting process, Liquid Luck, a premium, non-tradable currency, is also needed. It can be purchased on Open Loot starting at $4.99, earned in-game as rare loot, or gained through Mystery Boxes.
For example, crafting a Legendary Frost Pickaxe requires a Legendary Pickaxe FROSTprint, a Legendary Frost Workbench, a base pickaxe, and at least 175 Liquid Luck if you are using the most basic Stone Pickaxe.

Players who engage with this system early will have a chance to accumulate CRYO and position themselves for a potential future $FROST token airdrop, though the currency's wiki page claims that spending CRYO in-game “will have a better value proposition than swapping them for FROST.” Either way, the entire web3 layer is optional, and Moonfrost can still be enjoyed purely as a web2 farming RPG.

For those eager to start now, entry into Early Access requires a Gnome Key, which has a maximum supply of 8000 and is available on the Open Loot Marketplace at a floor price of around $3.10 at the time of writing. Each account requires one key, which acts as your ticket into the game. As for the game itself, you can download it from the Open Loot Launcher, with an official installation guide available to help you every step of the way.
