Ubisoft’s turn-based RPG Champions Tactics Reforged is officially coming to Steam on Monday, May 19th.
This launch to a wider gaming audience will mark the end of Season 3 and the start of Season 4, according to the official X announcement.
Reforged represents the web2 Steam version of Champions Tactics, the labeling used to differentiate from the web3-powered Grimoria Chronicles, which is available on Ubisoft’s store. In terms of features, this means that there is no blockchain technology integrated into the game, meaning players will not be able to use NFT characters to engage in PvP battles. This likely also means that a different reward system will be utilized, but there do not seem to be specific details at the moment to explain how that will work.
At its core however, gameplay features look set to be the same. This too will be a free to play experience in which you use squads of 3 different figurines called champions to engage in strategic turn-based battles against other players while earning “epic rewards” in the process. Everyone begins with a couple of starter champions to get used to the game’s mechanics. Each champion differs in varied stats and genes, all of which help make every character both visually and mechanically unique. There are thousands of unique champions to collect and create diverse teams out of that suit your strategies and playstyle, and you will be able to use Bloodstones to invoke and craft champions with unique skills and abilities for a huge amount of strategic gameplay depth.
With no NFT versions of champions usable in this edition, this could potentially make Reforged a more accessible free to play experience that gamers might be more willing to dip into without worrying about someone using on-chain assets that may or may not give an unfair advantage. Considering the official store page does have in-app purchases listed as one of the game elements though, it remains to be seen how this exactly will work and whether it will turn the game into a pay to win experience. The store page suggests a “tactical play to win” experience where your skills and tactics are key to winning battles instead of relying on luck.
Despite the launch taking place on Valve’s platform, anyone interested will need to link their Steam account with their Ubisoft Connect account in order to actually play, which is something that may not be viewed favorably by Steam’s massive userbase. The game also looks set to use EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) software and will actually include Steam achievements and trading cards, so achievement hunters and badge collectors may very well be looking forward to getting everything there is to collect for this competitive turn-based RPG, which you can wishlist now ahead of launch.
Exact details on everything new in Season 4 of Champions Tactics has not been revealed at the time of writing, so we’ll have to wait for Reforged’s worldwide launch to find out what’s in store for the latest season. The only bit of info available so far can be found in an announcement in the game’s official Discord server, which states that Season 4 includes a small patch that improves the overall experience while teasing full info to be coming soon.
The web3 version of Champions Tactics launched on October 23rd, 2024 with its own NFT marketplace on the Oasys blockchain, and you can download the blockchain version of the game for free through Ubisoft Connect on PC. Earlier this year, Ubisoft expanded its web3 push with Champions Tactics avatars in The Sandbox, and it looks like they’re now broadening their IP further by bringing it to traditional gaming as well.
