Ubisoft Working on Play-to-Earn Games

Ubisoft Working on Play-to-Earn Games

In an investor call Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot revealed that the French gaming company is working on blockchain-powered play-to-earn games. The company believes the technology is revolutionary, and that it will grow the gaming industry a lot.

We already know Ubisoft invested in Animoca Brands, and of course they've been supporting various blockchain gaming projects through their Entrepreneur's Lab. However, Guillemot said that Ubisoft will develop its own play-to-earn games, even though the company said that their development is currently in its early stages.

Ubisoft expressed in the conference call that it sees value in play-to-earn games as a way for players to actually earn from and own content. However, Ubisoft didn't reveal any specific titles.

Ubisoft and play-to-earn so far

Ubisoft has been dipping its toes in blockchain technology for quite some time. They’ve organized entrepreneur labs, inviting the likes of Xaya, Axie Infinity, Splinterlands, Guild of Guardians, Sorare and many others. They also sold some charity NFTs featuring their Raving Rabbids franchise. However, we still haven’t seen NFTs in Assassin’s Creed or one of the Tom Clancy games. However, Ubisoft supports the blockchain-powered game distribution platform Ultra as well.

Earlier this year Ubisoft launched a fantasy football game, tapping into the NFTs from the Sorare football game. They've worked together with Sorare during the sixth season of their Entrepreneur's Lab. Ubisoft has been acquiring lots of expertise from the blockchain gaming scene over the past 3 years, as they worked with Splinterlands, Axie Infinity, Guild of Guardians and Xaya. Just to name a few.

However, Ubisoft also applies their view on gaming to the blockchain gaming industry. In March the company behind Axie Infinity announced that Ubisoft praised the improvement on their battle systems. Players still need to see these updates, but it just shows that Ubisoft is involved with the companies in their entrepreneur's program.
