French gaming giant Ubisoft has officially unveiled Might & Magic Fates, a new blockchain-powered trading card game built on Immutable zkEVM, marking one of the most interesting moves by a traditional AAA publisher into the web3 gaming space.
The announcement, made jointly by Immutable and Ubisoft on April 23, introduces a free-to-play, skill-based mobile game that leverages blockchain infrastructure for digital asset ownership and on-chain gameplay.
Might & Magic Fates is the latest installment in the long-running Might & Magic franchise, which dates back to 1986 and spans over 30 titles across multiple platforms and genres. The new game reimagines the series as a web3-native collectible card game, featuring hundreds of cards, PvP mechanics, and tradable assets.
According to Immutable, the game was built by a team of Ubisoft veterans and backed by “millions in investment.” It will operate on Immutable zkEVM, the Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution optimized for gaming.
The game is set to launch later in 2025. No specific date has been disclosed.
Ubisoft confirmed that Fates will not include pay-to-win mechanics. Instead, gameplay progression and competitive success will depend on player skill, positioning it alongside other strategy-first titles in the TCG genre.
The game will support on-chain card ownership, meaning players will be able to fully control, trade, and interact with their assets across secondary markets and compatible platforms.
Immutable noted that Fates introduces “unique card types, original mechanics, and deep lore integration,” offering a differentiated experience for both traditional gamers and crypto-native users.
Immutable first announced its AAA partnership with Ubisoft in 2023, but details of the collaboration remained under wraps until now.
"This is a defining moment for web3 gaming," said Immutable co-founder Robbie Ferguson. “We're proud to bring one of the world’s most iconic franchises on-chain in a way that’s meaningful, competitive, and player-first.”
The title joins Immutable’s growing ecosystem of blockchain games, which includes Gods Unchained, Guild of Guardians, Illuvium, and Shardbound. All of these titles aim to combine traditional gaming experiences with blockchain-enabled digital ownership.
Ubisoft was one of the earliest traditional game publishers to experiment with NFTs and blockchain, launching the Quartz platform in 2021. While the initiative faced community backlash, the company maintained its interest in decentralized infrastructure and has since partnered with multiple web3 firms.
The Might & Magic Fates announcement reflects a strategic shift, moving from experimentation toward full product development with integrated blockchain infrastructure and player economies.
The game is currently in development with a 2025 release window. While competition in the web3 TCG space continues to grow, Ubisoft’s legacy IP and Immutable’s tooling offer a notable advantage.
Whether Fates will successfully onboard traditional gamers into blockchain gaming remains to be seen, but the project could set a new precedent for large publishers entering the decentralized gaming market.
