After going radio silent for a while, developer Directive Games is finally back with a new preview trailer for Open Beta Season 3 (OBS3) of their top down hero shooter, The Machines Arena (TMA). Next to the flashy trailer, the web3 game developer also published some new info on how they plan on actively communicating across their socials from now on.
The action-packed preview trailer teases a variety of new game content for players to enjoy and collect. Through this minute long showcase, the community has been given a glimpse at some of the new Skins that will be possible to unlock and mint throughout the season. Next to new cosmetics, a new map, new Familiars and new collectibles in the form of Seasonal Reward Crates were also teased, and anyone looking to gain rare items and power-ups will want to get a hold of these lootboxes. Crates will come in 3 different rarity types and require using keys to unlock, with keys set to be earnable through gameplay and also available as an in-game purchase.
The trailer also confirmed that the Ultimate League is indeed still on course to launch for OBS3, giving players a new way to compete for rewards. The tokenized game mode was initially announced back in December 2024 as a web3-powered mode that is separate from Ranked gameplay, allowing the team to experiment with new progression mechanics without disrupting the existing competitive gameplay experience. All features and content mentioned back then still seem to be on course for the new season, which means there will also be improved matchmaking for a fairer experience, alongside double XP weekends to help players level up their heroes faster.
There is still no official launch date for Open Beta Season 3, with the only info given being that it is tied to the $TMA TGE. Once the token launches, the season will be able to commence as the first token-based season for the Ronin-powered title, but a timeframe for the TGE is still not available either.
Open Beta Season 3 itself represents a new ranked season and content update, not a play to airdrop event. Near the end of April this year, the team’s Chief Product Officer revealed in a Discord announcement that the season and the new game mode are actually ready to be launched. However, the studio has chosen to delay the release and wait for the TGE to take place first before kicking off the new season. Doing it this way is said to be “critical, as launching the update without a token would hurt the project as a whole.” It’s just that they didn’t expect for the delay to last this long after the P2A period, with the silence coming as a result of “navigating an unexpectedly complex situation, including market conditions that are far from ideal.”
From now on however, the studio aims to break this lengthy silence and actively communicate with their community, with the shift marked by the release of the new preview trailer. In a Discord announcement, the team explained their reasoning for posting this:
“Because going silent while waiting for TGE helped no one. It frustrated even the people who've been understanding and patient with us, and rightly so. That's our bad. This post doesn't fix everything, but I believe it's a step in the right direction. We want to show you the project's alive, progress is happening, and communication is coming back - consistently, not just once. I know some of you are still going to be upset, and you're allowed to be. Just keep in mind: venting all over the place won't make TGE happen faster. You can help us push forward or keep dragging things down - your call.”
That being said, the studio is going to make its socials more active by posting regular insights on the upcoming new season.
Early this year, it was announced that The Machines Arena is coming soon to Steam and PS5. In the meantime, you can play The Machines Arena for free on PC and Android by downloading the Windows version or the APK file through the official website, with PC gamers also able to get the game on the Epic Games Store.
