HitBox Games secures $1.6 million in seed round for hack & slash MMORPG Swords of Blood

Game development company HitBox Games has revealed that they have secured $1.6 million in a seed funding round to develop Swords of Blood, a hack & slash MMORPG inspired by the Diablo series.

Based in Sheridan, Wyoming, the studio consists of industry veterans who have previously worked on titles in well-known gaming franchises such as Rainbow Six, Prince of Persia, Sim City 2000 and more. Among them is Jakub Szamalek, who has previously worked as a writer on games such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, while the CEO, James Seaman, has over 35 years of game dev and management experience.

The US-based company has received funding from Master Ventures, Labs, Fundamental Labs, SphereOne and more investors.

The CEO of partner SphereOne, Christopher Ries, said the following in a statement to GamesBeat:

“Swords of Blood will be the key game to help onboard the next billion users to Web3. It offers incredible game mechanics and unique seamless Web3 integration, while not compromising on an exciting storyline. We’re impressed with the team’s mobile-first approach and their ambitious roadmap. Swords of Blood is an important partnership for us, and we are glad to provide them with a more streamlined experience on our cross-chain payment platform.”

Set to run on the Polygon network, Swords of Blood will be free to play and will have players collect resources as they earn an in-game currency, explore dungeons, craft various items, unlock upgrades, take down mini-bosses and more. Next to PvE gameplay, players will also be able to compete in tournaments as well as in 4-player, 8-player and 16-player PvP game modes. It’ll be playable on Android and iOS devices, and thanks to a partnership with Stardust, the team will be able to utilize the Stardust Vault proprietary wallet solution, allowing for creation of custodial wallets in-game and thus making it possible to purchase the upcoming $SWDTKN token without having to exit the game.

The Web3 RPG is based on Blade Bound, a mobile RPG that came out in 2018 and has amassed more than 4 million downloads since, with the developers now holding full rights to the Web2 title.

James Seaman, the CEO of HitBox Games, added:

“We designed Swords of Blood as free-to-play RPG to tap the market for mass adoption by both Web2 and Web3 players. The game is ready to download and play, no need to buy any NFT or deal with an external wallet. Your account will have a safe custodial wallet to hold all items or use SWDTKN tokens without leaving the game.”

“Players will remain in full control of their assets, which cannot be revoked or locked. This is highly important in rebuilding a robust blockchain system, especially after the latest events with a flawed ownership model, which led to crypto market volatility.”

A closed beta is planned to be held at some point in the future.
