Symbiogenesis — the web3 title from Square Enix — has officially joined Sony's Soneium blockchain. Planned to be shut down in July 2025, the game is now getting a second life through Sony's blockchain ecosystem.

This move makes Symbiogenesis the first web3 game from a major publisher to land on Soneium, Sony's still-young onchain platform. Whether this will save the game or just prolong its niche appeal remains to be seen. But the plan is clear: Sony wants Soneium to be more than just another blockchain. They want it to be the platform where major IP meets cross-game rewards and real interoperability.

"Game studios and entertainment giants are choosing Soneium as a channel to collaborate, distribute, and connect with a new generation of builders," said Sony in an official blog post. "They're not just launching onchain, they're choosing a place where cross-game collaboration, interoperability, and creative ownership are part of the foundation."

A Comeback, With Caveats

The Soneium expansion isn't a full-blown reboot of Symbiogenesis, and it's unclear if major new content is coming. The core game remains the same — a sprawling digital collectible experience built around 10,000 unique character NFTs and six chapters of heavily text-based storytelling. Players who complete chapters 1 through 4 by May 31st can now earn a commemorative NFT, which unlocks perks in two other games on Soneium: Evermoon and Sleepagotchi.

And that's really the heart of this update — Symbiogenesis is no longer just a standalone experience. It's a gateway into a broader web3 gaming network.

What's the Deal with Soneium?

Soneium is Sony's big bet on blockchain — a dedicated web3 ecosystem that ties together games, content, and digital ownership. It's designed to support interoperability between games, allowing characters, items, and rewards to cross from one title to another.

So far, Soneium is building its roster with titles like Evermoon, a 5v5 MOBA with DeFi rewards, and Sleepagotchi, a light mobile game that turns daily habits into game actions. Both now connect directly with Symbiogenesis via shared missions and unlockable bonuses.

"This initiative connects three distinct gaming worlds through a shared quest, collectible rewards, and a new way to engage through blockchain gaming on Soneium," said Sony.

What's New for Players?

According to the team, those who finish the Symbiogenesis main story through chapter 4 will get a unique collectible on Soneium. That NFT then acts as a pass to early access and in-game bonuses in the other Soneium titles.

Some of the perks include:

  • Boosters and a rare One-Horned Dragon in Sleepagotchi
  • Early beta access to Evermoon and special profile customizations
  • Eligibility for future onchain rewards in both games

Each of the three games is bringing its own flair, but they're now loosely tied through this event and the Soneium infrastructure.

Symbiogenesis: High Concept, Niche Appeal

Launched in December 2023, Symbiogenesis was Square Enix's first major web3 effort. The pitch was ambitious: a mix of collectible NFTs and branching interactive fiction. The setting? A floating continent in a post-apocalyptic future where players uncover secrets and control fates.

The gameplay took place across Discord discussions, limited-time quests, and NFT-based choices. It's layered and creative, but not exactly mainstream. Despite more than 1.1 million words of text and unique character arcs, the game struggled to find a wide audience.

Still, Sony believes in the concept.

"Symbiogenesis is the flagship web3 entertainment project, blending interactive storytelling, NFT ownership, and game progression into a single immersive experience," said Sony.

Why It Matters

This crossover could mean more than just survival for Symbiogenesis. It's also a test case for Sony's wider blockchain plan. If Soneium can create meaningful, fun bridges between games, and give NFTs real utility across ecosystems, it could quietly become the go-to platform for onchain gaming.

And for Square Enix, it's a chance to see whether their story-first approach to web3 gaming still has legs — especially when linked to a bigger network of titles.
