Shanghai Government Reveals Plan to Open Metaverse for Tourism and Culture Development

The Government of Shanghai has released an ambitious plan to integrate metaverse into revolutionizing tourism and culture throughout the country. In a comprehensive breakdown, the Shanghai government focuses on the applications of advanced augmented reality(AR) technologies in enhancing the travel experience for tourism. Within the space of two years(2023-2025), the government plans to create a more immersive and inclusive environment. 

Shanghai's proposed metaverse features a list of several key objectives: expedition of a widespread deployment of a 5G network, a campaign for the adoption of cutting-edge computing platforms, and fostering technical infrastructure built to encourage digital cultural tourism. These aforementioned computing platforms must be able to provide real-time spatial computing and cloud rendering. 

Shanghai Launches Tourism in Metaverse

This announcement signifies the government internet to permit museums, art galleries, exhibition venues, and commercial districts to embrace virtual reality (VR) technologies. Popular VR technologies include extended reality (XR), naked eye 3D, holographic projection, digital light and shadow, and employing equipment like ball screens and intelligent perception. Such integration will create immersive cultural and tourist experiences that seamlessly interact with the virtual reality realm.  Shanghai government aims to increase the use of blockchain technology and increase financial support for the study and development of the cultural tourism metaverse industry system.

The Shanghai Fengxian District launched “Tax Metaverse”, a virtual world designed to improve the experience and efficiency of tax payment.
