Set in a twisted future where corporate greed runs rampant, Off the Grid takes place on Teardrop Island, a chaotic war zone dominated by ruthless gaming corporations. Players take on the role of customizable heroes fighting for survival in this harsh environment, where both PvP and PvE elements collide in exhilarating battles.
The gameplay centers around third-person shooter mechanics with elements of both battle royale and extraction shooters. If you’re familiar with titles like Apex Legends, Fortnite, or PUBG, you’ll feel right at home. However, Off the Grid adds its own twists, with features like cyber limb customization and a gritty narrative that keeps the gameplay fresh and intense.
Off the Grid offers two main game modes that let players test their skills in different ways:
1. Extraction Royale: In this mode, 20 squads of three players each drop into a designated area on Teardrop Island. The objective? Extract valuable loot known as "hexes" while completing side missions, enhancing loadouts, and outlasting other teams. As the play zone shrinks over time, players are forced into closer combat, creating thrilling and strategic encounters. And don't worry about being eliminated right away—if you have a team member alive, you can respawn indefinitely, keeping the fight going.
2. Battle Royale: For those seeking an all-out free-for-all experience, the Battle Royale mode brings 150 players to the island in a bid to be the last one standing. This mode also features side missions and "Enclave Operations," allowing players to control shrinking zones and gain strategic advantages. Notably, this mode includes a 60-hour narrative campaign, blending story elements with high-stakes gameplay, which can be played alongside your teammates.
One of the most exciting aspects of Off the Grid is its extensive character and loadout customization. Players start by designing their character's appearance, from face and body type to clothing style. But the real innovation lies in the cyber limbs.
Each limb can be upgraded with functional cybernetic enhancements that alter gameplay. For example:
With over 30 limb upgrades and 300 weapon combinations, players have immense freedom to create a build that fits their playstyle. Weapons are also fully customizable, with parts like scopes, muzzles, and under-barrels that can be swapped out to enhance performance in different combat situations.
The game’s expansive map, Teardrop Island, is divided into distinct sectors, each with its own backstory and environment:
As the game progresses, more areas of the island will unlock, expanding the battlefield and offering new strategic opportunities.
While Off the Grid includes NFT integration, players can enjoy the game without any blockchain interaction. The main in-game currency, called "Gun," is earned through gameplay and can be spent on upgrades and special items. Gunzilla Games has announced that this currency may be wiped in the future, but players will receive prior warning to spend their currency accordingly. Additionally, Off the Grid offers a Pro Membership for approximately $12 per month, providing exclusive benefits like item selling on the player-to-player marketplace, battle pass rewards, and access to restricted tournaments.
Off the Grid is currently in Early Access and available to play on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. PC players can download the game from the Epic Games Store, while PlayStation and Xbox users can find it on their respective stores. Early Access players can retain any gear accumulated during this phase, so it’s a great opportunity to build up your arsenal before the full game launch.
For Xbox players, access is currently limited to selected users in North America and Europe via the Xbox Insider program, so you may need to join the program to gain early entry.
