After hosting “First Jump” and “Into the Flame” closed beta events this year, sci-fi roguelite Wanderers is now heading into open beta on July 30th via the Epic Games Store, allowing anyone to play and earn the upcoming $WANDER token for free by participating in the recently launched Play to Airdrop Campaign.
By heading to the page linked in this tweet, you can participate in the first phase of the $WANDER Play to Airdrop Campaign by claiming your galaxy and completing various quests. These quests seem to be only social ones for now, but we will likely get to see gameplay-based ones added once the Animoca-backed title opens up for everyone to try out, or maybe other avenues will be used to determine reward distribution. There aren’t many social quests available, so hopefully that means the airdrop is truly geared towards rewarding active players through gameplay. That indeed did seem to be the case for the previous closed playtest, where players could claim quests to earn XP on the same website for activities such as reaching level 20, finishing a playthrough in less than 20 minutes, killing a Dark Entity and more. In a Discord announcement last week, it was teased that this campaign will “evolve across multiple phases, activations and competitions” so you will be able to participate in various different ways ranging from playing and collecting to creating and engaging with the community.
That being said, there aren’t many details available on this public phase at the time of writing. One of the new features that we do know is coming but wasn't present in the closed beta build is the RAM Card Fusing feature. This mechanic lets players combine any number of cards that they want during a run in order to boost them, as shown in this video embedded in a recent X post. Earlier in the month, other additions teased to be making their way into this free to play release include improvements to Infinite Mode, the introduction of Daily Challenges and integration of a WanderID account system.
According to the listing page on Epic Games Store, players will slash and shoot their way through procedurally-generated worlds in unique sci-fi isometric roguelite gameplay featuring deckbuilding elements. Players will unlock RAM cards that upgrade abilities during a playthrough, with a single-player campaign mode also allowing players to gain new characters, abilities and weapons to keep each new run fun and exciting.
Next to these features, the Web3 title will get updated over time with co-op and PvP gameplay, and a level editor will also be introduced to foster community-created content and thus add even more replayability. Based on the FAQ section on the store page, it looks like players will be able own the levels they create as NFTs to enable ownership of user-generated content, but since the game is off-chain, players won’t need to connect any wallet or interact with any blockchain features to play the game. There will be a web-based chain agnostic platform instead for on-chain trading. Next to all this, new characters, weapons, RAM cards and worlds will also of course be introduced, likely in the form of seasonal content, as this early access launch will mark the start of Season 1. The developers plan on exiting early access in Q2 2025, and you will be able to download the latest build for free on Mac and Windows PCs.
This stylish action-packed game is published by Wander Labs and in development by Blowfish Studios, the Animoca Brands portfolio company that you may know as the creator of Phantom Galaxies, an open world space mech RPG. Back in 2022, Wander Labs secured $2 million for Wanderers in a seed round led by Animoca Brands and GameFi Ventures. Back then this was an NFT collection, and Wander Labs was looking for ways to expand the IP into different mediums, including video games. To do that, they teamed up with Blowfish Studios to develop this blockchain title, initially revealing pre-alpha gameplay back in August 2023. Almost a year later, it looks like it is now time to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy an early version of the full free to play experience, and potentially earn an airdrop of WanderCoins ($WANDER) along the way. The TGE date for the $WANDER token has not yet been revealed.
