Nine Chronicles Is Moving to Proof of Stake System

Open-source idle RPG Nine Chronicles is soon officially transitioning over to a Proof of Stake (PoS) system in order to introduce a variety of benefits while improving decentralization and paving the way for a more community-driven future of this long-running on-chain title.

What Benefits Does the Proof of Stake System Bring to Nine Chronicles?

By introducing PoS on Odin Planet, players will be able to improve the security and decentralization of this game’s blockchain by staking tokens, while getting rewarded for doing so.

While the existing system comes with scalability limits, switching over to PoS resolves this and thus enables more players to join in backing the network through staking, making the network more decentralized and thus enhancing the security of it and the web3 game as a whole, making it harder for malicious actors to attack the ecosystem. If the switch encourages more players to stake and become validators, this could in turn improve the value of the $NCG token, as the game’s core token is the one that will be used to participate in the new staking-based system.

By providing economic incentives for validators, the community is more likely to help enhance the reliability and security of the network, in turn strengthening the protection of their staked assets. This type of reward system was not possible to be introduced using the previous PBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance) mechanism.

With the PBFT system, which has been used since April 2023, there was a point in which security and performance could no longer be enhanced by increasing nodes. This is not an issue with PoS, as the more tokens there are being staked, the stronger the network is, requiring an attacker to have a huge number of tokens to properly breach security. Should an attacker end up being successful, the announcement states that they would “risk devaluation of [their] assets” anyways.

The team has come up with a roadmap detailing the transition to PoS. The rollout consists of a couple of phases, starting with the Odin PoS launch in Q4 2024. In this first phase, recruitment for the first external validators will commence, and players will be able to start staking $NCG tokens to support the network and earn rewards in the process.

In Q1 2025, block rewards will start to be distributed for your staking contributions, with early stakers getting bigger rewards/APR. This is where the developers expect to see more users start staking. It’s also when they plan on launching new blockchain games under the same IP, which could increase the demand for $NCG and drive more user activity. The studio is targeting to exceed 100 million $NCG in staking volume by the end of 2025.

The final phase is planned to launch sometime after Q3 2025, introducing various guild and reward upgrades. This means that guild features will get some big updates to make them crucial parts of the game’s economy and governance, making rewards depend on “staked NCG and contributions made within guilds.”

How Will Rewards Be Calculated When PoS Goes Live in Nine Chronicles?

The reward per block will initially be 4 $NCG once the PoS transition on Odin Planet takes place. These block rewards will be distributed as “Mead”. You will be able to convert Mead into $NCG. Overall, there will be 8640 blocks a day, making for a total yearly amount of 12,614,400 $NCG in block rewards.

Currently, users are spending 350k $NCG per month on average, or a total of 4.2 million per year. With the new mechanism changes and the launch of new web3 games, the team hopes to increase the annual token usage to 8.4 million $NCG tokens, with 97% of spent tokens to be redistributed as staking rewards, while 3% are burned.

With the Q4 2024 update, there will only be one guild: the Planetarium Guild. For the first half of 2025 though, the team plans on making it possible for anyone to create their own guilds. This means validators will be able to operate guilds, and the more $NCG spent by players from your affiliated guild, the more rewards you will get while covering gas fees for guild members using Mead, receiving 10% of $NCG spent by users from the guilds you’re affiliated with. Through this system, the team wants to encourage validators to actively engage with the game’s community instead of working solo.

Guilds also get 10% of $NCG used by their members, with rewards sent to the guild’s collective address instead of the clan’s leaders. There will also be guild-specific rewards for having members take part in activities related to the arena, world bosses, and adventure bosses.
