Journey to Godhood: An NFT-powered Discord Game

Journey to Godhood, a Discord-based play-to-earn game that uses NFTs on the Wax blockchain, launched the first version of their game this week. Players journey through the lands, fight fearsome monsters, and gain experience as they seek to rise above the role of mere mortal, and become a god.

I don't have much experience with Discord-based games. They never seemed very appealing to me. But Journey to Godhood caught my attention because they are linking their game ecosystem to NFTs on the WAX blockchain. Therefore I decided to give it a try. Here's my report.

Journey to Godhood is a fantasy adventure game. Players assume the role of a hero and go on adventures. The game devs have a roadmap that includes plans for PvP, dungeon adventures, crafting, guilds, and something called the Divine Realm.

The game already suffered some growing pains. They changed their in-game token to Godtoken, due to an error that resulted in 6 million GodCoins (the original token), being suddenly dumped on the market. If you haven't played yet, or never withdrew any coins from the game, your coins are fine. Otherwise, you might want to head over to the official Discord and read up on the announcements.

Tell me how to play

As for the game itself, it's basically a text adventure with some graphics thrown in. Players equip themselves with game NFTs from their Wax wallet. Each player can only equip one weapon and one armor. Each piece of equipment gives players bonuses in the four stat categories: Speed, Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution.

Equipment comes in the standard variety of rarities, ranging from Common through Mythic, but it also has a Tier rating. Tiers range from 1 to 4, with higher tiers offering improved stats. Rule of thumb is that a Mythic is better than an Epic of one tier higher. For example, if you're using a Mythic, don't upgrade unless you can get a Legendary or better in the next tier.

Godtokens and adventures

Players go on Adventures. Each Adventure results in an encounter, that the player can choose to fight or run away from. Supposedly there are some multi-step encounters, but I haven't seen them yet myself.

For each successful battle, players receive experience. Losing a fight costs experience. Losing experience won't cause your character to level down, but it will make it harder for them to reach the next level. With each level gained, players choose to add 5 points to any of their base stats. Players also receive Godtokens, the in-game currency used for in-game features and upgrades. Players can also transfer the tokens out of the game and sell them on Alcor Exchange.

There are also random material drops, used in a crafting feature that is not yet implemented. Each Adventure costs 25 energy. Players can accumulate up to 100 energy which refills at a base rate of fiver per hour. Players upgrade their tents to increase their passive energy gains.

What else should I know

Journey to Godhood has a very interesting feature called Full Idle Mode. This allows players to automate their character, for those times when they are going on vacation or perhaps just aren't interested in actually playing the game. The character will go on random adventures and choose whether to fight or flee. Full Idle characters are limited to three adventures per day and require at least a level 1 upgrade on your tent.

At this time, multi-accounting is specifically not allowed. Player governance, an upcoming feature for Journey to Godhood, may change this rule.

Players own all of the land in Journey to Godhood. Landowners receive daily income from players adventuring on their lands. A portion of all Godcoins earned during the day is split equally among all owned, opened lands. That's right, unopened land packs are missing out on this passive income. Lands are represented by NFTs and can be bought, sold, and traded on secondary markets.

The game requires an initial investment for equipment, but after that you can play freely. You can read more in their official whitepaper.
