In a significant move that underscores the burgeoning interest in blockchain gaming platforms, web3 gaming studio Hyve Labs has successfully raised $2.75 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Framework Ventures.

Alongside Framework Ventures, this financial boost also comes from investors such as Volt Capital, Builder Capital, 32 Bit Ventures, and a couple of angel investors from Zynga, InfiniGods, and more, highlighting a robust confidence in Hyve Labs' vision to innovate the gaming industry through decentralized blockchain technology.

What Is Hyve Labs Using the Pre-Seed Funding For?

The blockchain gaming company's focus is on building a gaming rollup by leveraging decentralized data availability services like EigenDA, which aims to act as a cross-chain game launcher. This approach allows for seamless integration across various social platforms like Telegram, Discord, and Farcaster, positioning Hyve as a versatile player in the gaming space.

Lucas Fulks, the CEO and Co-Founder of Hyve Labs, expressed his enthusiasm about the investment, stating the following:

“With the backing of incredible investors like Framework and Volt Capital, this funding propels us closer to redefining the gaming landscape. Our mission is to create a gaming ecosystem that prioritizes fun and engagement for players while empowering developers and builders to innovate without constraints.”

Next to developing their own gaming rollup, the capital infusion will be channeled into expanding the team and developing crucial infrastructure. Among the immediate goals is the launch of their testnet chain, the introduction of their first game, and the creation of other on-chain assets. These steps are pivotal for Hyve Labs as they aim to establish a solid foundation for a gaming environment that is inherently decentralized, secure, and user-centric.

Overall, we can look forward to seeing the Hyve ecosystem consist of social GameFi experiences with embedded AI, powered by web3 native game mechanics. All of it is underpinned by the team’s vision to deliver seamless distribution and onboarding, making it easy for traditional gamers and developers to become a part of this upcoming new platform.

Before the announcement of this significant funding round, co-founder and CEO Lucas Fulks, together with co-founder and CTO Cori Grohman, discussed the concept of 'Casual+' in an official video tweeted earlier this year. The insightful discussion talks about this gaming model that goes beyond typical gaming norms, aiming for experiences that are both engaging and accessible, but without using the label of “web3 gamers”. Their philosophy is in contrast to the web3 gamers archetype, as they don’t believe in a future where gamers should be referred to as being exclusively players of web3 games. Instead, they’re looking at “redefining gaming beyond Web3” by delivering a "faster, smoother, and web-first" approach to gaming, making blockchain gaming widely access to a global audience while hiding all the web3 intricacies from the public to make for a user-friendly experience.

Hyve Labs believe games should be web-based mobile experiences that can be accessed from anywhere at any time without being locked behind app stores that take a percentage of the developers’ earnings. In an earlier X thread, the funded startup also lists AI as being a crucial aspect for the team’s plans and development workflow. By embedding AI into their platform, the gaming studio is looking to leverage machine learning to enhance game mechanics, create dynamic content, and improve player interaction, thereby offering a richer, more personalized gaming experience. Not only is AI set to be used to deliver better games, but they’re also using it at every stage of development as well, integrating AI into internal tools and workflows to allow developers to quickly ship and test their games.

By building in this ecosystem, developers will also get to use the team’s infrastructure and tools that make it easier to focus on the fun parts of development, while the studio’s ecosystem tools handle all the core economy-related multiplayer components for you, such as leaderboards, battle passes, identity, and so on.

When Will Hyve Labs Launch Their Testnet Chain?

An exact launch date for Hyve Labs’ testnet chain does not seem to be available at the time of writing. Earlier this January they did seem to tease their first game, revealing that the name is BitByte and that it’s coming soon, but a release date that for that is also not available yet. It does seem to be early days still, but perhaps we’ll get a roadmap with estimated timeframes in the near future. Here’s hoping the successful pre-seed funding round helps the team fulfill their vision of creating an accessible gaming ecosystem full of fun blockchain games for everyone to enjoy across the web without needing to know all the tech behind crypto.
