The Splinterlands team behind Genesis League Goals, an upcoming sports game on the Genesis League Sports platform made in partnership with the MLSPA (Major League Soccer Players Association), has recently published a post detailing how skills in this blockchain title will actually work.
In this strategy game, which was initially labeled as Genesis League Soccer, skills represent modifier cards that are divided into active and passive types. They affect gameplay and act as consumables that managers can use and attach on to a player card by adding them to the right slot on the card. This means that in order for their effects to actually apply, they need to be placed into the player card. Once a skill is equipped onto a card, the skill will be auto-locked and unable to be transferred or sold separately.
Managers will be able to earn skills as rewards by playing matches, but should there be a specific skill you want but are not able to somehow get through gameplay, then you also have the option of buying your desired skill from others.
These consumables will be possible to find in 4 different rarities: common, rare, epic, and legendary. The rarer the skill, the stronger it is and the higher chance it has of actually working and affecting a match in your favor. Throughout a match, managers will be able to manually activate active skills, while passive skills will simply turn on by themselves if the situation is appropriate.

Genesis League Goals is the first game launching on the Genesis League Sports platform, and it also represents the second large game made by the Splinterlands team, where you’ll take on the role of a manager and compete against like-minded individuals by managing soccer teams featuring MLSPA players in the form of card NFTs. As with their first title, this soccer one is also launching on the Hive blockchain. A whitepaper for Genesis League Sports was released last year.
