STEPN developer Find Satoshi Lab (FSL) has updated its strategic mobile game Gas Hero with a couple of new changes and bug fixes to improve the overall Web3 gaming experience during the closed beta testing phase of the Polygon-powered title.
Among the most significant changes is the introduction of a new Hero Mountain scoring mechanism. Hero’s Mountain is a competitive weekly game mode where players complete various daily challenges to gain points used to increase your rank, earning treasure chest rewards once the Bronze rank is reached. A higher rank lets you gain more treasure chests. There is a specific limited number of PvP opponents you can play daily, and you can add another 4 by spending Hero Potions. At the end of each weekly tournament, players who are at least Bronze get Radiation Hero rewards, while the top 500 players earn a share of a GMT prize pool that varies in quantity each week.
Depending on whether you win or lose, you’ll either gain or lose a certain number of points, with the winner getting a bit more points than the number deducted from the losing side’s score. With this month’s update, the developers have attempted to improve this scoring mechanism by introducing upgrade and downgrade protection. This means that there is a certain points range in which players earn or lose points at a normal rate. If you pass a certain threshold within the day, either in the positive or negative values, you will start seeing a protection sign, which means that if you gain plenty of points that day and pass a certain range, the sign will appear to signify that any further matches played that day will only give you a 25% points increase. The same applies for losing; if you lose too many points, the downgrade protection activates, meaning further losses only come with a 25% point deduction instead of the normal rate, helping players stay closer to their initial score of the day by giving a cushion to soften the fall.
Next to the new scoring rules, the skill tree reset cost has been reverted back to normal, and players can now transfer skill points across different factions. There’s also Weapon Reforging, which reshuffles the weapon’s attributes and the numbers of those attributes by using a Gas Can and Reforging Dust. If you just want the values of the attributes to be adjusted, then the new Weapon Remodelling feature lets you do just that with a Gas Can.
This week, starting from Tuesday, July 9th, players will be able to participate in a new Hero Mountain round featuring a 265k GMT prize pool, which is almost 100k tokens more in comparison to last week’s 187k GMT reward pool. The top 500 players will receive gGMT rewards (locked GMT), with the highest-ranked player getting 5% of the prize pool, which is 13250 tokens that are currently worth around $1800 at the time of writing.
The rest of week 19 is full of clan and guild-based activities, with registrations for the Guild Arena opening on the same day when the weekly competition begins. These are followed by clan boss fights and sign-ups for the Guild Gas War battle where guild members will do their best to secure rewards for their team.
If you’d like to try out the closed beta version of Gas Hero for yourself and compete for GMT rewards, you will have to fill out a waitlist form found on the game’s official website. Players who already have access can fill in a referral form to recommend their friends who have signed up to the waitlist. While it’s not clear how many people are currently on the waitlist, the team continues to regularly open slots to allow more testers in, with this month alone seeing 2 new batches of players gaining access. If the developers accept your application, you should see an acceptance email pop up in the coming weeks, according to the latest Discord announcement.
