Spider Tanks, one of the earliest multiplayer games in the web3 space, is officially making a comeback. GAMEDIA has announced that it is reviving the title under the new name Spider Tanks: Cores of Chaos, this time in partnership with Immutable. The announcement confirms that the game, first launched in 2021 and once managed by Gala Games, will now return as part of Immutable Play's growing lineup.
The reboot marks the start of a new chapter for both the game and its original developer. After a long legal and creative conflict with Gala Games, Dutch studio GAMEDIA is now taking full control and rebuilding the title on a new platform that promises improved performance and better support.
A New Start with Immutable
Spider Tanks: Cores of Chaos will now be hosted on Immutable, the Ethereum Layer 2 network designed for games. According to Immutable, this version of the game will benefit from enhanced speed and scaling, as well as better support for digital ownership.
Robbie Ferguson, Co-Founder and President of Immutable, stated, "Spider Tanks embodies what our platform stands for—truly fun and high-quality gameplay that harnesses the benefits of web3 without friction. We're so excited to bring the revival of Spider Tanks to life."
GAMEDIA's CEO, Dittmar Tukker, emphasized that this return is more than just a relaunch. He described the new version as a chance to refocus on fun while working with a partner who values transparency. "Reviving Spider Tanks isn't just about bringing back a fan favorite to a community worth fighting for," said Tukker. "It's also about showing the market that web3 games should be about fun first!"
Teaser Footage Points to Spider Tanks Revival
The first hint of this comeback came in last August, when Immutable announced a new deal with GAMEDIA. Though no game name was mentioned at the time, the teaser video that came with the post showed clear Spider Tanks footage. Fans immediately recognized the visuals from the game's earlier versions and started to suspect a revival was in the works.
Immutable praised GAMEDIA as a "proven web3 success" and highlighted the studio's 18 years of experience in game development. This gave more weight to the idea that Spider Tanks could return with stronger backing and better infrastructure.
Launch Date and Early Access
The new title, Spider Tanks: Cores of Chaos, is set to go live in early access on December 8, 2025. It will be available through Immutable Play, the same platform hosting games from other big names like Ubisoft and Habbo X.
A new Discord server has also gone live for fans of Spider Tanks, where the community can follow the development and get updates on gameplay and launch details.
Fallout with Gala Games
The road to this comeback has not been easy. GAMEDIA's fallout with Gala Games was public and long-lasting. Spider Tanks was first built in partnership with Gala and was heavily promoted as a web3 esport. It featured NFT-based tank parts and a native token called $SILK. The game was supposed to be one of the major titles running on GalaChain.
But by mid-2024, signs of conflict began to surface. On May 28, 2024, GAMEDIA published a detailed public statement outlining its issues with Gala Games. The studio said the relationship began with trust but ended in legal threats and broken promises.
"Initially, we chose to defer to Gala Games for community communication as a courtesy," the statement said. "However, our respect turned to apprehension, as Gala Games started threatening us with legal action in December. This inhibited us from speaking out sooner."
GAMEDIA explained that it was brought in to develop Spider Tanks and deliver set milestones, while Gala was supposed to handle promotion, publishing, and user acquisition. But those responsibilities began to shift. GAMEDIA claimed it had to run marketing campaigns on its own, manage trailers, and even lead events like Spider Fridays, originally planned by Gala.
Accusations of Broken Promises
The public statement also accused Gala of diverting attention and funds away from the game. GAMEDIA said that by 2023, Gala showed no intent to use its share of revenue from Spider Tanks to grow the game or support the player base.
They pointed out that Gala had started focusing on other areas, such as film and real estate, and was no longer following its original goal of supporting blockchain gaming. GAMEDIA claimed that user growth was stalled by Gala's decision to gate marketing behind a model they called "eat what you kill," which placed the burden of success on players and the studio itself.
"By 2023, it became evident that Gala Games had no intention of utilizing their half of the substantial 2021 Spider Tanks revenue or to fulfil their promises," the statement continued.
The studio said it had also worked on other titles for Gala, including STODA and Wizards & Warriors, and had even invested in a new office. But those projects never moved forward, as Gala allegedly refused to sign the contracts needed to publish them.
Legal Dispute and Outcome
The disagreement reached a breaking point in late 2023, when GAMEDIA finally stepped away. "In October 2023, we had exhausted all avenues to steer Gala Games back to their stated mission," the studio said. "We could no longer allow Gala Games to continue to use our commitment to the game and our IP to enrich themselves at the expense of the community."
In response, Gala Games tried to claim ownership of the Spider Tanks IP and took the matter to court. But the Central District Court of California dismissed the case in September 2024, stating it lacked jurisdiction. This outcome cleared the way for GAMEDIA to move ahead independently.
Immutable Partnership Grows
After the legal battle ended, signs of GAMEDIA's return began appearing. The studio posted on social media in late 2024, thanking Immutable for visiting their office. In February 2025, they shared more posts featuring Immutable co-founder Robbie Ferguson, confirming that the two sides were working together.
Now, the relaunch of Spider Tanks under Immutable is official. The game joins a lineup of web3 titles backed by the same platform, and fans who have followed the journey from Gala to now are waiting to see what this new version will bring.
