Football.Fun has raised $2 million in an investment round led by 6th Man Ventures (6MV). Backing also came from Devmons, Sfermion, The Operating Group, and Zee Prime Capital. The team says the money will help build "the world's most rewarding fantasy platform," starting with the most popular sport in the world—football.

The announcement comes as the team prepares for a full onchain rollout, known as FDF Pro, which is set to launch in August 2025.

What Is Football.Fun (FDF)?

Football.Fun is a web3-powered football speculation game where users build digital squads made up of real-life football stars. Players earn rewards when their team performs well in live football matches. The game combines fantasy football rules with trading mechanics and runs in a browser without any need for downloads.

The key innovation is fractional player ownership. Users can own small shares of players rather than full NFTs, which keeps it low-cost and more accessible. Shares earn gold (FDF's in-game currency) based on how well the players perform in real-world matches.

How the Game Works

Once you sign up at app.football.fun, you'll receive 1,000 gold and three player packs to start. Each pack has four players with different share amounts. The value of each pack depends on the player share count and the players' current market value.

You can open one free pack every 4 hours, with a maximum of 2 held at once. Gold is used to buy and sell shares, helping you build a strong squad. Trades take place in a live market using pool-based liquidity rather than order books. This makes player values update quickly and ensures instant trades.

The game charges a 5% fee on all buys and sells. This helps balance the economy and promotes long-term strategy over constant flipping.

Tournaments and Gameplay

Twice a week, Football.Fun hosts tournaments. One runs Friday to Monday and the other from Tuesday to Thursday. You don't need to set a lineup; any player with a valid contract who appears in a real match will automatically join.

Top-performing players in each position group (forwards, midfielders, defenders) earn gold for all users who hold shares in them. Goalkeepers have three reward spots instead of five due to fewer active players. The higher your share count in a winning player, the more gold you receive.

For example, if a player earns a reward and you own 500 out of 1,000 active shares, you'll receive 50% of that reward. This creates added value for spotting rising talent early, especially lesser-known players who aren't widely owned.

Two Reward Systems in Every Tournament

  1. Player Rewards: Earned based on player performance and how many shares you own.
  2. Team Rewards: 19% of the prize pool is set aside for the top 10 teams with at least 10 members.

Top-ranked teams split this 19% pool, with 1st place receiving 22% and 10th place receiving 1%. This team-based system adds another way to earn, beyond just individual trading and performance.

Managing Contracts

Each player comes with 4 contracts. These are only consumed if the player appears in a real match. If a player's contracts drop to zero, they cannot compete in the next tournament or earn you gold. You can renew contracts by buying more shares or using the management features in your squad tab.

This makes contract strategy a key part of the game. Picking players with consistent match time is essential, and managing share amounts becomes even more important as your squad grows.

Web3 Access Without the Hassle

Football.Fun runs in the browser and avoids app store fees. Users can log in using email or popular crypto wallets such as MetaMask, WalletConnect, Rainbow, or Coinbase Wallet.

Unlike other blockchain games, FDF doesn't use official player images or licenses. Instead, it uses its own custom art to cut costs and give more value back to users. It also uses an automatic issuance system called "Motty" that adds new player shares based on demand. This helps avoid inflation and keeps the market balanced.

About the Gold Rush Rewarded Beta

The team previously ran a series of "Gold Rush" beta events where players could earn exclusive rewards by growing their squad value and winning in tournaments. Rewards included physical merch, digital kits, and bonus gold.

But all beta rounds have now ended. As confirmed by the team in Discord, Football.Fun is now on pause while there is no major football being played and while the team transitions to the next phase of development.

All Trading and Pack Opening Is Now Disabled

As of now, player trading and pack opening have been paused. Those who try to open packs will see a message saying "Trading is currently disabled." This is a temporary move while the platform transitions to its onchain version. According to team updates, the pause will continue during the football off-season and resume closer to the launch of FDF Pro.

Skill-Based Rewards, Not Just Spending

FDF uses a skill-rating system that ensures rewards are not based on how much you spend. While players who invest more can get more shares, success depends on how well you pick and manage your team. This keeps gameplay competitive and strategic.

Users who pick hidden gems early and avoid over-owned players can earn more gold if those players perform well in tournaments. That's because fewer people are sharing the prize.

A Platform Built for Longevity

With $2 million in fresh funding and a launch target of August 2025, Football.Fun is touting itself as a next-gen fantasy platform for football fans. Investors like 6MV and Sfermion are backing the project for its low-cost, browser-based model and strong community engagement.

The use of fractional shares, contract systems, and automated tournaments gives it a unique angle in a space crowded with pay-to-win NFT games. With the platform now offline during the football off-season, new features are expected to roll out once the major leagues return, possibly including full onchain gameplay and improved rewards.

The game's focus on easy access, skill-based rewards, and sustainable economics sets it apart from many current web3 titles. With the FDF Pro launch set for August, the next phase of development is likely to begin in the coming weeks.
