Football Star Mesut Özil Drops Crypto Art NFT

Former Arsenal and new Fenerbahçe signing Mesut Özil is the first football player to collaborate on a crypto art NFT. He's collaborating with artist Boss Logic and avatar platform Genies, while the artwork will sell through Nifty Gateway on Monday February 15th. All proceeds will go to charity organization Big Shoe, helping poor children with medical conditions.

The announcement by Özil comes a bit as a surprise, just like Lindsay Lohan and Soulja Boy made surprise appearances in the crypto space recently. However, it's not himself who's doing the work. His digital representation made by Genies will be the one doing the heavy lifting.

It's exactly one of the reasons why Genies makes sense. These virtual representations can take on jobs that don't require the actual individual to do anything on location. Last year Justin Bieber already used his Genies avatar to announce the launch of his Christmas album on Amazon Music.

Both Soulja Boy and Lindsay Lohan seem to have done paid promotions for Justin Sun's Tron, alongside other celebrities like Kendra Lust and Lil Yachty. Soulja Boy and Lohan also dropped crypto art on Rarible. The question that remains, is when Mesut Özil will promote Tron. We'll see. Oh, and it's important to note that none of these promo tweets were labelled as advertisements or sponsored tweets.

What are NFTs?

NFT is the abbreviation for non-fungible tokens, which are tokens that signify ownership over unique digital assets. These assets can for example be items in a game, crypto art, or digital collectibles. In addition it could also be a ticket for a cinema or perhaps a subscription for public transit. The usability of NFTs doesn’t end with gaming, it only starts there.

A non-fungible token can’t be swapped one-on-one with another non-fungible token. It represents something unique. That’s why non-fungible tokens can be based compared with rare art, an owned house or a signed mint edition of a certain comic book. These products are unique and in the same way a non-fungible token is unique as well. This gives non-fungible tokens also an unique value that only represents that one specific token.
