FIFA is launching its own blockchain platform with Avalanche to support its growing web3 plans. As part of the move, it will migrate its NFT marketplace, FIFA Collect, to this new Layer-1 network. The goal is to offer smoother digital experiences and simpler wallet access for its 5 billion fans around the world.
FIFA Picks Avalanche to Build a Layer-1 Network
The new chain, called the FIFA Blockchain, is a custom Layer-1 solution. It uses Avalanche's fast, low-cost technology to offer better speed and scale.
"The decision was based on a rigorous analysis of key factors including performance, security, transaction fees, customizability, and scalability," said Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex, the firm helping FIFA build the platform.
This custom blockchain is a big shift away from FIFA's past use of Algorand. FIFA previously launched its digital collectibles there but is now moving all assets and its entire marketplace to Avalanche.

FIFA Collect Will Migrate to Avalanche
As part of this move, all FIFA Collect NFTs and features will shift to the new network. Those who used Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly will need to switch. Going forward, FIFA Collect will work with Ethereum-compatible wallets like MetaMask, thanks to Avalanche's EVM support.
"We worked with FIFA Collect, who wanted a better solution for their marketplace and a platform that can grow with more use cases, applications and assets," said John Nahas, VP of business development at Ava Labs.
"Only their own chain can support their ambitions, and provide them with their own L1 blockchain, as to launching on an existing general-purpose chain," he added.

Why Avalanche?
Per the official post, FIFA chose Avalanche for its technical strength and ability to handle large, global traffic. The Avalanche platform offers near-instant transactions, low fees, and the power to scale for billions of users.
This means fans can enjoy digital collectibles and events without network delays. Even during massive tournaments like the World Cup, the chain can keep up.
Modex's Abbate added, "This move enhances our ability to deliver unique digital collectibles and immersive fan experiences, powered by the speed, scalability, and EVM compatibility."
Avalanche's L1 tech also gives FIFA full control. The chain runs independently but remains connected to other Avalanche and Ethereum tools.
Future Use Cases
FIFA's new blockchain will start with NFTs. But more use cases will come later. While FIFA has not revealed those details yet, the foundation is built for more digital fan tools.
These could include fan tokens, web3 games, or digital tickets for events.
In fact, in November 2024, FIFA also teamed up with Mythical Games to create FIFA Rivals, a free to play mobile soccer game that is now open for pre-registration.
A Big Win for Avalanche?
FIFA's choice seems to be a major vote of confidence for Avalanche. As one of the biggest sports organizations in the world, this move highlights Avalanche's strengths as an enterprise-ready blockchain.
"FIFA Blockchain is a significant step forward in Avalanche's broader mission: powering adoption of real-world applications that reach beyond the crypto-native audience," stated the official blog from Avalanche.
