Developer Eternal Squares has announced that development on their web3 game Eternal League has been paused or halted indefinitely, but the project will not shut down straight away, as servers are supposedly set to be open until the end of 2025 so that players can continue to play to earn through the game’s Immutable Play Leaderboard.

Why Is Eternal League Pausing Development?

Just like with 99% of blockchain gaming projects and games in general, development on Eternal League has been paused due to lack of funding.

The team acknowledged that they haven’t been really active on social media and with updates to the game in general, admitting that they were focused on trying to “secure funding to continue the development” of their action RPG. “Unfortunately this was something we were not successful [with],” causing the studio to move their team away from the game, according to the official Discord announcement.

“We are sorry to deliver this news, as we put our hearts and souls into the game. We hope that we will find [a] solution, or find a way to bring other great projects in the future, and I'll keep you all posted in the server as we are committed to run the Discord until the servers for Eternal League are up and running. Huge thanks from the Eternal League Team!”

Based on the wording, the chances of this project going back on track seem to be quite slim, as the developers seem to have very much moved on to working on other projects instead. While development seems to be paused for now, unless some surprise funding comes out, it looks like this is yet another web3 gaming project shutting down forever.

The announcement however does state that servers for the game will continue to stay open for the rest of this year, while “very few updates” will be made throughout these months, as the team has moved away from the project. They are likely keeping the game up due to their Immutable-powered quest event, though at the time of writing, players seem unable to login and continue playing. Hopefully a fix is coming soon, and if the project doesn’t get revived, then hopefully we’ll see it go open source in the future, like Blast Royale did, instead of just completely shutting down like almost every other game has.

No official X post was made for this, so here’s an image of the Discord announcement, on which you can see the unsurprising reactions from the community. What Is Eternal League?

Eternal League is a roguelike action RPG set in a top-down sci-fi world. Players can customize their hero’s appearance, abilities, and equipment before diving into fast-paced combat against waves of increasingly difficult enemies across environments such as ruined battlefields and neon-lit cities. Each run follows a session-based progression system that adapts to performance, offering upgrades and challenges that aim to keep gameplay varied.

Playable heroes can be upgraded over time with new skills and equipment, while companions such as Tanks, Rangers, and Mages can be recruited to join battles. Companions have their own abilities and personalities, and they can be leveled up further to support different team strategies. Multiple companions can be used in a session, giving players the option to experiment with different team compositions.

The game also features a glyph system that introduces runes capable of randomizing or enhancing abilities. These runes add unpredictability to each run by unlocking new skills or combinations that may influence survival and progression.

On the web3 side, Eternal League is powered by Immutable zkEVM. NFT-based equipment can be traded, upgraded, or dismantled into crafting materials, with planned cross-game utility across the developer’s ecosystem, which includes a card game scheduled for beta in late 2025, but that probably won’t be happening now.

Eternal League first launched in early access on Steam on March 26, 2025, as a $5.99 web2 title. A free to play web3 version followed on June 27 through the Epic Games Store, as initially planned in a roadmap published in May, which came shortly after forming a partnership with Immutable. The early access build includes 5 playable heroes, 4 levels, 10 companions, and the core mechanics. According to the FAQ from the game’s store page, progress was set to be preserved across updates, and early access was expected to last around 6 months. The full release was planned to expand the roster of heroes and companions while introducing additional abilities, levels, and new gameplay systems, but it looks like none of that will be happening now.

In early August the team launched an NFT sale of Early Supporter Packs for the price of $39.99 USDC on TokenTrove. The total supply of the game’s Early Supporter Packs is 2000, but only 4% (87!) of that supply has been minted to date, since August 8. As the game did not seem to have any investor backing, the future of this game sadly was not looking bright after that unsuccessful sale.

The NFT sale was followed by the launch of the game’s new leaderboard on Immutable Play near the end of August, giving participants about 90 days to climb to the top 200 for exclusive prizes alongside weekly rewards for 40 random participants. You can download the game from the Epic Games Store and link up your accounts if you'd still like to go about completing the game's quests on Immutable Play.

After the recent announcement, it seems very much unlikely that any of the highest-ranked players will win the planned exclusive prizes. Completing quests that require making purchases for an abandoned project also does not seem really worth it now. The only aspect guaranteed here are Immutable's Gems currency, awarded in varying amounts depending on which quest you beat and used for buying Keys to unlock rewards such as $IMX from Weekly Draws.
