Decentraland has announced it is replacing the rules of digital identity in its Metaverse. Instead of the old numerical system, Decentraland will use NAME, a method that allows individuals to use names that represent them.
Users won't need to use a crypto hashtag followed by numbers but will have names attached to their digital identity. This move will promote a sense of ownership, freedom, and responsibility to players.
To push the innovation further, each NAME will be linked to an ENS subdomain. These domains are URLs that work on Ethereum and also serve as wallet addresses. For instance, a person who identifies as 'Doe' would have the ENS subdomain 'John.DCL.ETH'. This level of integration refines each process of trading NFTs and other products, thus providing a seamless pathway for digital domains.
Via a post, Decentraland said,
"Are you looking to develop your virtual persona? Begin by claiming your Decentraland NAME. In Decentraland, your name is displayed above your avatar. If you haven't purchased a name, it will appear with a '#' followed by four digits. By acquiring an NFT name, you ensure it's unique to you and free from any additional characters. The same name cannot be minted twice!"
Apart from the naming, players can also change the outlook of their digital space using 'Worlds.' This new infrastructure offers them a fresh slate for creativity and interaction and to cultivate a sense of virtual ownership. The way to create one's 'World' is available just by owning a NAME.
The new naming system has a synergy with Decentraland's DAO. This is because assets like NAMEs allow players to have voting power, which they can use to change the outlook of the metaverse.
