Minted Loot Studios, the developer of blockchain multiplayer action RPG ChronoForge, has been officially approved as a Nintendo Switch publisher, allowing the company to bring its roguelite title and possibly future games over to this highly successful and popular system.
With this approval, the blockchain gaming studio becomes one of the first web3 developers to receive official approval, paving the way for more crypto game developers to gain access to Nintendo’s loyal playerbase in the future.
The announcement does not provide plenty of details on what this means for the web3 title moving forward. Aside from opening the gates to huge growth for its free to play game and having the opportunity to “take advantage of the unique play styles” supported by this system, we don’t have specific info on how this upcoming version will work.
Will this console version integrate blockchain features? Will there be a warning that this is an NFT game like there is on the Epic Games Store? Will Nintendo players have the option to somehow gain access to the web3 side of the game if they want to? Maybe outside of the game through cross-platform support? Or the developers will just have to create a web2 version like some studios choose to do if they want to launch on Steam. We don’t seem to know that yet.
Maybe Nintendo is reassessing their stance on web3 games given how much more accessible and web2-friendly they’ve become over the years. More and more blockchain games are giving players the option to simply enjoy gameplay without interacting with any crypto-related features, even creating internal wallets upon registration if so needed while keeping everything hidden for a seamless gaming experience. Maybe this edition will keep everything behind the scenes too, and allow players interested in web3 to access blockchain features outside the game itself.
All in all, it seems to be early days for the Nintendo Switch version of ChronoForge, given that there is no release date or launch timeframe either. But the announcement is a great start either way. Hopefully we’ll find out more details in the near future.
If you haven’t heard about this game before, then read on to find out more before it goes live on Windows PCs, potentially in March this year.
ChronoForge is a third-person hack and slash roguelite RPG on an MMO scale. Players will choose from 12 different combat classes and embark on real-time battles across procedurally generated dungeons featuring resources you can collect and use for improving your equipment as well as for upgrading your settlement. Yep, there will be player-governed flying fortresses called trading companies that the community can upgrade in order to craft rare and powerful gear. It looks like you will be able to choose which community-owned airship you’d like to work with. Next to raiding dungeons solo or in teams, it looks like there will be open world mini-games to earn resources from too. Playable characters can even act as AI-powered companions.
Your choices matter in this game, as you and everyone will be able to vote on trading company decisions that can have global consequences. Players will be able to vote every week on various decisions. Want to attack a rival trading company? Vote! Want to gain access to better gear? Vote! Want to destroy the whole world? Vote! Yeah, you can actually cause a global apocalypse in this web3 game by setting up too many crafting facilities synonymous with the game’s title. If there are too many of them, it’s game over, the entire planet is destroyed, and so are all trading companies. It sounds like a pretty cool concept. I'm curious to see how players will cooperate in this one.
Check out the official documentation page to learn more about what looks set to be a pretty fun team-based action RPG. When ChronoForge launches, you will likely be able to play to airdrop straight away or soon afterwards.
While the game itself will be free to play, it seems like the airdrop campaign will not, as you’ll need to buy a battle pass, which is set to cost similarly as traditional battle passes. Speaking of traditional, anyone not interested in the web3 side of things will be able to enjoy the game as a regular online title.
In January 2025, ChronoForge migrated to Abstract Chain while introducing the upcoming $CHRONO token. The Abstract Chain went live on mainnet near the end of last month.
