Argentina has officially opened its doors to the world of crypto for contractual agreements. This move reflects the nation’s commitment to economic reform and also paves a way for innovative financial transactions.
This development was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. The ministry is headed by Diana Mondino. The Minister, on a social media platform, said: “We ratify and confirm that in Argentina, contracts can be agreed in Bitcoin.” She further mentioned that other forms of crypto including tangible assets are also permissible.
In addition, Mondino made a reference from Article 766 while making the announcement. This particular article outlined a debtor’s obligation. It stated,
“The debtor must deliver the corresponding amount of the designated currency. This is whether the currency is legal tender in the Republic or not.”
This move also hinges on the so-called ’Bases for the Reconstruction of the Argentine Economy’ decree. This decree refrained from explicitly referencing cryptocurrencies. It however allowed debtors to make payments with currencies not legally recognized.
Milei’s Vision For Bitcoin in Argentina
President Milei, a libertarian with a staunch support for Bitcoin, has shared his views. He stated his ideas on the digital currency as a key element in the nation’s financial system reformation. He criticized the underscoring of Bitcoin’s potential to restore monetary control to the private sector. The President has also advocated that embracing cryptocurrency can protect citizens from inflation.
The decision to employ Bitcoin for trading contracts speaks of the nation’s dedication to unlock the possibilities with crypto. This further ensures a steady rise in economic growth and development. With this agreement, the government seeks to create an environment that supports investment. However, the government is yet to release the specific details regarding the legal intricacies of the agreement.
