The developers of blockchain-based card game Splinterlands have released the Modern & Wild update, changing the way ranked battles work by splitting them into Modern Ranked and Wild Ranked.

Wild Ranked battles are basically the regular kind of ranked battles players are used to, where every card from every edition is allowed. The new Modern format however, changes this, by making it so that only cards from newer editions, expansions are allowed to be played. This means Chaos Legion, Azmare Dice and Untamed contain cards fitting the new Modern label. The team has also said that some Reward & Promo cards that have the Chaos Legion and Untamed style frame (such as Mighty Dricken, Halfling Alchemist, and Waka Spiritblade) are eligible for use in Modern Ranked battles.

This split now gives players more options to choose how they want to play, with the team expecting that the Modern format will be good for newer players who may not have the older cards to fairly take on other older players who do, as these cards may not be quite easy to obtain nowadays. On the other hand, experienced players with Alpha & Beta cards can now possibly enjoy earning more rewards in Wild ranked battles if a good amount migrates to focusing on Modern ranked matches. This means that there are now 2 DEC reward pools, one pool for each format. The ECR mechanic continues to function normally as it did before, no matter which format is played.
