Web3 gaming studio Today has announced that they have successfully raised $5 million in a seed round to develop generative AI NPCs and more for their upcoming blockchain social sim of the same name: Today.

Funding Details

The funding round was led by metaverse-focused investor Sfermion and crypto investment firm Big Brain Holdings, with participation from GSR, Spirit DAO, Builder Capital, Metavest Capital and more.

This new funding, according to GamesBeat, is said to be used to develop the game’s generative AI NPCs and no-code tools. The studio’s co-founder, Michael O’Connor, said the following to GamesBeat:

“Social simulation games lack deep, realistic NPC interactions which limit player immersion and reduce relationships to superficial exchanges. We’re transforming expectations by replicating the nuances of real-life dynamics using advanced AI that gives our NPCs unparalleled depth and responsiveness. This seed round accelerates the development of our vision to build the most immersive, rewarding and unique social sim ever created.”

About Today

Today is a blockchain social sim inspired by games such as Animal Crossing and The Sims. In this cozy game, players will be able to use no-code tools to create their own 3D islands and in-game objects, retaining ownership of anything they make and buy. While building your virtual island, you will also be taking care of your community of NPCs called Residents, which will be powered by generative AI to bring lifelike conversations instead of using premade responses. This will open up the opportunity for emergent storytelling, with the company using its own character engine to add personalities to NPCs that are said to change over time, making your interactions with these characters dynamic and unique.
