As NFTs and blockchain gaming rise in popularity, so does interest from many huge gaming companies. An industry insider going by the Twitter name ‘RalphsValve’ has become known in recent months for leaking lots of information related to the popular Call of Duty franchise.
This time, the new leak suggests that Infinity Ward, one of the main Call of Duty developers, alongside redesigning the series UI, will be introducing new elements to account personalization: Global Calling Cards & Emblems, Avatars and Statistics. Coupled with that info is also NFT integration in future CoD titles – Activision has been considering adding in NFTs for months now, but seeing the negative reaction gamers have shown towards companies such as EA and Ubisoft, it very well likely may end up dropping the idea.
“NFT’s have been under review, and in consideration, for a few months. With EA’s immediate backlash against NFT’s, It can totally fall through. MTX and Content structures are influenced by trends and predictions, NFT’s just seem to be that at the moment.” said the industry insider.
Whether this info is correct or not remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that various AAA companies have either looked into or are still considering adding in NFTs to their current and upcoming titles. The question remains: will these gaming companies utilize NFTs in a proper way, one that benefits the players who enjoy their games, or will they be exploited in a way that will paint the technology in an even worse light?
Ubisoft’s take on the innovative tech sure hasn’t been a good one, with the French publisher ending support for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and the NFTs that were added to the aforementioned Tom Clancy entry not too long ago. Let’s see if Activision, Sega and any other known game publisher or developer have anything better up their sleeves.
