Deadrop, a vertical extraction shooter in development by Dr Disrespect’s gaming studio Midnight Society, has officially been approved by Xbox, according to a tweet by Director of Technical Product, Rich Cabrera.

Approval Details

The news comes almost a month after Cabrera tweeted an image of a Discord message revealing that the team has been approved to build on PlayStation. This means that the company now has developer accounts for both major consoles, paving the way for a big multi-platform launch of their upcoming Unreal Engine 5 title. By now having the path open to launching on both platforms alongside PC, Deadrop has the opportunity to have a huge playerbase of gamers enjoying Web3 gaming without needing to know anything about blockchain technologies.

On that note, it remains unclear if Web3 features will be integrated in the console versions. When the announcement that the studio became an official PlayStation partner, one Twitter/X user asked whether it’ll be similar to how blockchain games work on Steam, where Web3 integration is not allowed but requires developers to instead provide a traditional gaming experience while moving the blockchain side of things over to an official website. Cabrera responded by saying “TBA, working that out,” so it’ll be interesting to see if Microsoft’s and Sony’s stance will be different from Valve’s and more in line with Epic Games’ approach where they simply put a warning on a game’s store page to make their users aware of blockchain integration.

In the official Discord server, it's been revealed by Studio Head Robert Bowling (fourzerotwo) that the studio's console outsourcing team has managed to get the game to run on Xbox Series X, with the company planning on starting to do internal console playtesting soon. According to Bowling, the plan is to have playable console builds available on both consoles at the same time, “if we're able to successfully pass certification on both platforms in parallel.”
