GensoKishi Online, the play-to-earn 3D MMORPG operating on the Polygon blockchain, will end its game service on April 30, 2026. The GENSO Operations Team announced the shutdown during an AMA held on February 26, 2026, citing an unsustainable financial structure that left the project running a significant monthly deficit with no clear path to recovery under the current model.
The announcement confirmed a two-phase wind-down. As of February 27, in-app purchases through Google Play, the Apple App Store, and Slash Payment were suspended immediately, and official Scholarship NFT sales also ended on that date. On April 30, game servers will go offline, the GENSO Marketplace will shut down, the LAND Viewer will be suspended, and MV Wallet service will be discontinued. MV Staking reward allocations across Polygon v1, ETH v2, and Polygon v2 will also stop from April 30 onward.
A Monthly Deficit That Could Not Be Closed
The official termination notice published on the GENSO website lays out the project's finances in full. Monthly fixed costs totaled approximately JPY 10 million, broken down as follows: infrastructure costs at JPY 3.4 million, labor costs at JPY 3.0 million, listing maintenance fees and ROND buybacks at JPY 1.3 million, external service fees at JPY 0.7 million, advertising expenses at JPY 0.3 million, and other expenses at JPY 0.8 million. Monthly revenue from marketplace fees, in-app purchases, and advertising stood at approximately JPY 2 million, leaving a recurring shortfall of around JPY 8 million each month.
The team confirmed it had implemented phased cost reductions and structural adjustments over time, but that improvements in market conditions and revenue did not materialize quickly enough to close the gap. The delay in reaching this decision was acknowledged directly by the operations team as a responsibility they accept.
What Happens to NFTs, Tokens, and Player Assets
On-chain NFTs and tokens, including MV and ROND, will continue to exist on the blockchain after the servers go dark. However, they will lose all in-game utility once the service ends. Players holding NFTs listed on the Marketplace are advised to delist them and complete any pending NFT synthesis before April 30. Scholarship NFT exchange pages will remain accessible due to the product structure requiring exchanges within 180 to 210 days of purchase.
LAND assets, which were planned as part of the metaverse expansion, will become unavailable when the game server and LAND Viewer shut down. MV Wallet will also close on April 30, and users are advised to transfer tokens and NFTs to an external wallet before that date. MV Staking will no longer generate rewards after service termination, and the team recommends that players begin unstaking now. USDT Staking, which operates independently of the game, will continue.
Refunds are not planned in accordance with the project's Terms of Service.
A Door Left Open
The GENSO team stated clearly that it does not wish to see the service end permanently. The operations team will continue to explore a transfer of operational rights to a third party, migration to another company, and the establishment of a new sustainable operational model. Should a successor or transferee be identified before the April 30 deadline, there remains a possibility of service continuation.
The team also addressed community-driven alternatives. While a DAO transition or community operation is technically possible through contractual arrangements, the team noted the complexity involved: third parties cannot be granted open access to game systems, programs, resources, and data, and any takeover would require both a sustainable funding structure and a fully operational management team. Interested parties are directed to contact the team through the official website.
The notice closes by stating that rather than treating April 30 as the conclusion of the GENSO project's Web3 journey entirely, the team intends to explore a new chapter for the MV token and the GENSO brand.
About GensoKishi Online
GensoKishi Online, also known as GENSO Online or Gensokishi Online Meta World, is a 3D blockchain MMORPG developed by METAP INC. The onchain title combined Free-to-Play, Play-to-Earn, and UGC-to-Earn mechanics within a fantasy role-playing world. Players could earn in-game currency ROND and the native MV token through quests, battles, guild activities, and user-generated content creation via the GENSO MAKER tool. The game positioned itself as the first 3D MMORPG on-chain that prioritized actual gameplay alongside its blockchain economy, running on Polygon with bridges to Ethereum and Arbitrum. At its peak, the title featured Scholarship NFTs, seasonal staking rewards, a live Marketplace for NFT trading, and LAND parcels designed for the broader metaverse expansion. The project has been operating for approximately three years. With monthly revenue covering only around 20 percent of its operational costs, the financial pressure proved too significant to overcome without a structural change that did not arrive in time.
