The Wildcard Alliance has officially transitioned its tactical arena title to a 1v1 format as of today, February 17, 2026. This shift establishes 1v1 as the primary competitive mode for the project, moving away from the previous 2v2 ladder structure. To support this transition, the development team has released a comprehensive balance patch designed to enhance solo viability and match pacing. These changes aim to refine champion strengths and weaknesses for a head-to-head environment while consolidating the player base through a structured ranked schedule.
Champion Balancing and Pacing Adjustments
The transition to a 1v1 focus requires a significant recalibration of champion power levels to ensure fairness without team-based synergies. Damage outputs for several key characters have been increased to maintain high-pressure gameplay. Ragna now deals 28 damage, up from 25, while Gane sees a substantial increase from 12 to 22. Locke has also been buffed with base damage moving from 9 to 15 and hover damage increasing from 6 to 10. Additionally, Locke’s Sidekick damage has doubled, now reaching 100 points.
To further increase match intensity, health pools for champions and major units have been reduced. Bolgar’s total HP has been lowered from 400 to 325, and the Werebear unit’s health has moved from 500 to 375. The Super Werebear has seen a reduction from 600 to 425 HP. The Goalie, a central objective in matches, now has 5000 health points, down from the previous 7500. Match timing has also been tightened, with wave intervals reduced from 60 to 30 seconds. Health recovery now takes 5 seconds instead of 10, and the added respawn time per level has been decreased from 5 seconds to 1 second to minimize downtime.
Revised Ranked Access and Schedule
The Wildcard Alliance is implementing a new operational window for its ranked queues to improve matchmaking quality. Starting today, February 17, 2026, competitive play will be available from Tuesday through Saturday. The queues will remain active between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM EST. This window ensures a higher concentration of active participants during peak hours, which the team believes will lead to more balanced pairings and faster queue times.
In terms of accessibility, every player now receives 10 free ranked games per day. This daily allowance is designed to allow all community members to experience the new 1v1 meta without an initial financial commitment. Players who wish to compete beyond the 10-game daily limit must own the Season Pass. For those who have already purchased the current Season Pass, the Wildcard Alliance is offering exclusive rewards. Pass holders can open a support ticket to receive the Retro Neva skin and one premium color variant for both Bolgar and Locke.
The Vision of Wildcard and the Frostburn Universe
Wildcard is a hybrid onchain title that blends elements of collectible card games, real-time strategy, and third-person action. Developed by the Wildcard Alliance, a subsidiary of Playful Studios, the game is set on the Frostburn Asteroid, a dynamic location where champions from across the galaxy compete in high-stakes arenas. The project is led by Paul Bettner and Katy Drake Bettner, veterans of the gaming industry known for creating Words With Friends and contributing to the Age of Empires franchise.
The project secured a $46 million Series A investment led by Paradigm in June 2022, highlighting significant institutional interest in the future of play. The development team has utilized this funding to build a "spectator sport" ecosystem where watching a match is intended to be as engaging as playing one. This is achieved through the integration of the Thousands platform, which allows viewers and streamers to interact with live matches and earn rewards based on their engagement and support of their favorite competitors.
Champion Lore and Strategic Depth
The game’s roster currently features distinct characters, each with their own history and playstyle on the Frostburn Asteroid. Bolgar, once a prince of the Saering royal family, became a champion after a magical connection with a bear cub transformed him into a "werebeared" warrior. His gameplay often focuses on defensive resilience and strategic positioning. In contrast, Locke is a former techno-engineer from Chronos who rose to fame by unseating the royal prince in an open tryout. Locke utilizes his Chronowarp ability and mechanical summons to outmaneuver opponents.
Strategy in Wildcard revolves around the management of a 10-card deck consisting of summons and wildcards. Players must deploy units to control space and protect their Goalie while actively controlling their champion to deal direct damage. The recent 1v1 update places even more emphasis on this mechanical skill, as players no longer have a partner to cover their weaknesses. The Wildcard Alliance has noted that further balancing may be required as the community adapts to this solo-centric meta.
The Wildcard Alliance will continue to monitor the 1v1 transition throughout the remainder of the season. The team has signaled that this is the first of several major updates planned for 2026 as the project moves toward its next phase of ecosystem expansion.
