Global payment company Mastercard has recently submitted 15 trademark applications related to NFTs and the metaverse to the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office).
Some of the details included in these patents mention “downloadable music files authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs)” as well as files that include audio, video, artwork and text also being verified using NFTs. There are also plans for building a digital marketplace, hosting virtual reality events, processing payment cards and more, all in the metaverse. One filling even speaks of “providing entertainment and educational information” in the metaverse, including topics such as finance, culture, sports, travel, technology and more.
These trademarks follow up on Mastercard’s February employment of 500 consultants who will help further the expansion into the world of crypto, helping various businesses in integrating crypto and NFTs. In January this year, a partnership with Coinbase was also made, allowing users to use their credit cards to purchase NFTs on the exchange’s upcoming NFT marketplace, which is currently available in closed beta. The collaboration will help make Coinbase NFT a more accessible marketplace for those who aren’t into crypto but would like to buy a non-fungible token.
The US-based corporation also announced a Start Path program back in July 2021, which is aimed at aiding startups focused on “digital assets, cryptocurrency and blockchain”.
